Tooth sensitivity after dental treatment is very common, but nonetheless irritating. Why would a tooth hurt after it has just been restored? Has something gone wrong? What do I do? These are common questions with simple and complex answers.
Why would a tooth hurt after a filling?
After the completion of a filling, teeth may be hot, cold, or pressure sensitive, which is completely normal and known as pulpitis. Anytime a tooth undergoes the trauma of being drilled and restored, the nerve can become agitated and produce sensitivity that can last for days to weeks. The risk of sensitivity is even greater if the decay in the tooth was deep and close to the nerve. If your tooth is sensitive, give us a call. Your nerve may need greater time to calm down, or the tooth may need to be adjusted.
Has something gone wrong; I’ve been told I may need a root canal?
Nerve pain that produces sensitivity to pressure and temperature is normal after a filling and though many don’t experience discomfort after a filling, others do. Sometimes, when the decay is too close to the nerve, a root canal may be necessary to restore the tooth. This does not indicate that a filling was performed improperly. Think of a filling as step one in restoring a tooth. If a filling is not able to restore a tooth sufficiently, a proceeding root canal and crown placement may be necessary. Fillings are more cost effective than root canals and crowns, and a dentist may attempt to save a tooth with a less invasive and more cost effective filling prior to performing more costly treatment.
My tooth is sensitive; what do I do?
Any time you have sensitivity, call us. We’ll ask you about your sensitivity and make recommendations that may help. Anti-inflammatory medication can be used, when appropriate, to help the nerve calm down, and adjustments on the tooth may help. After a filling is placed, the biting structure of the tooth is changed and further adjustments may be necessary to help alleviate pressure. Pain that keeps you up at night should not be ignored. Sometimes a tooth just needs time to heal. We can walk you through this process.

I had 2 fillings taken out and a decay in so fixed and he said it was close to the nerve. A deep one. Now it has a dull ache to it. Not that bad but borthers me. This has been since Dec. 22. Will it take longer to get rid of or should I call him back soon? It doesn’t hurt when I chew on it. Just bothers when my mouth does move. Any sugestions?
Having a small degree of sensitivity after having fillings done is normal, but from what you are saying you need to make an appointment and get the tooth evaluated. Call us at 360-254-5254.
Hey my name is miranda i had my fillings done along time ago like years ago ever since i got it filled 1 of my tooth has problems it hurts so much no pain meds helped and i even went as far to drink alcohol drinks and it still didn’t help i went to western Heights dentist and they said the person that did my teeth messed them up like overfilled my teeth and idk what to do about it
Have you gone back to the dentist to have your bite adjusted or the treatment fixed. Did the doctor take an x-ray of your tooth? Do you need a root if the pain is that bad?
If you went back to the dentist and they did not fix the problem and just stated it was bad work I would look for another dentist. Do not put up with the pain go back to the dentist and get the problem taken care of even if you need to change dentist.

Hi
I had a tooth that had a filling 2 months ago and after that afew days from that i felt pain and shocking pain and got to a point i couldn’t open or talk or even eat so i went back to my dentist told him everything and so he told me i have trigeminal neuralgia and up to today the medication im talking just doesn’t help at all … i feel like i dnt have trigeminal neuralgia its just the tooth thats affected but my dentist just keeps telling me its not the tooth… i have a 3 month baby and i am breastfeeding its afftecting that affecting my mood its affecting everything.. but my dentist doctor has not done any xray on that tooth he just has a look and tells me everything good and sends me off .. can someone help me pls
Hey so i had an extraction of my wisdom tooth and temporary filling of the crown however my filling is sensitive and painful for 3 days now, am on tramadol painkillers and antibiotics bt i still fill pain? What do i do? I have difficulty swallowing saliva nd food too, my filling hurts.
Hello, about two or three years ago I got two fillings and they are both starting to hurt now. The pain is stable and bearable but unexpected at times. I am worried and I’m not quite sure what that means.
I would go see your dentist and see if you have new decay on those teeth or it could be dentin sensitivity and you could try a sensitive toothpaste and see if that helps first.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling done yesterday and it feels like pressure on the tooth that got filled is that normal
Yes . It is normal for things to feel different with the anesthetic wearing off and new filling being placed. If you feel like you are hitting that tooth first your bite is off and will need to be adjusted. Contact your dentist if the tooth becomes hot or cold sensitive that doesn’t go away.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling done a month ago and I felt no pain after the procedure. Until a week ago, I started to feel an intense throbbing and increased sensitivity to cold and hot foods. The pain goes down jaw line, ear and throat. Do you think the nerve has been compromised?
I would go see your dentist. The symptoms you are having sound like you may need a root canal and crown.
Thanks WFDC Team
I couldn’t get a filling done due to the cold air pressure used to Cool the tooth while drilling to remove the decay. My teeth got so painfully cold the dentist couldn’t work on my teeth. What can be done to reduce the sensitivity to hot or cold air?
The tooth they were removing decay on should have had no feeling if it was numb. The other teeth may be feeling the cold. I’m confused as what was going on, you may want to try another dentist to see if they are able to do the work in comfort. If your teeth are generally sensitive to cold you can brush with a sensitive toothpaste.

Hi I had a 2 fillings on one tooth 3weeks ago. In the early days after the procedure, I did not feel any sensitivity. Just a liitle bit of bearable pain. But all of sudden, my tooth hurts whenever I touch it with my tongue or put a pressure with my finger. The pain now is constant though not severe. The tooth is not sensitive to cold or hot. I do not know what the problem is. I looked through the mirror and I can see cavity inside the tooth. The tooth is lateral incisor. I am worrying as it might require a root canal treatment. Could that be possible that left cavity is the reason? I think it is on the dentin area. Pls give me advise on this. Thank you
Hello, I had a root canal done today and a filling in my front tooth. It’s been a few hours but I can’t bite down on the tooth AT ALL. If it touches anything even my bottom teeth the pain is unbearable. Is this normal? Thank you so much.
That’s is normal.
My I filled my tooth approaching to 3weeks. It hurts day by day… Before after filling I could chew food but now I can’t chew even bread.. when the other tooth touches it, it pains alot… What can I do
If you have not contacted your doctor I would call them you may just need a bite adjustment. If the bite is high think of it a someone punching you in the are 24/7 the ligament are going to be very bruised and sore. If the decay was deep you may need a root canal. In the mean time until you see your dentist I would take some ibuprofen to help with the pain.

Hi, I have the filling on my premolar tooth number 4 to be exacted on January. I feel the tooth become very sensitive the beginning of April. The pain is stingling. I went to my dentist and he thinks because of the filling is to close to the nerve. He did gave me some toothpaste and adjusted my bite by grinding down the tooth. It was better because of the toothpaste ( I think). Then I stop using it and the pain is back. From what I read so far from this comment section, do I need a root canal ?
I do not think you need a root canal right now. I feel you need to keep using the sensitive toothpaste. If the tooth becomes sensitive to hot & cold and sensitivity does not go away, then you will need a root canal. It a good sign that the toothpaste had helped while using it.
Thank you,

I just had a deep filling 4 days ago. Last night, my tooth is in pain. My ear and my jaw hurts. What should i do
I’ve just had an emergency filling they said it’s part one as my tooth cracked due to decay the said, it had a hole all the way to the nerve I’m sure she said she was going to take it out, it was filled the injection has worn of and the pain now is excruciating, is this normal if she’s taken out the nerve why is there still pain ?
Hi! I would really need some advice. A year and a half ago i got a filling done. The pain never went away, though i have some days it’s better. The dentist that did the filling originally told me that it would go away and did not bother to try helping me. This last September, i found a new dentist and he couldn’t see any decay on the xray and suspected that the filling was not done properly. However, when we re-did the filling, the pain still was there. Yesterday i went back to the office because i realized i forgot to mention the tiny hole where the majority of the pain stood. ( he didn’t have that done ) He then drilled that area and filled it. Still, i have pain when chewing, especially where the hole area. But not sensitive to hot and cold. Just chewing. I think that’s probably not normal, cause it’s not just senstive. I’m running out of ideas what could be the problem and hate to be returning to the dentist a dozen times. Also i have preety healthy teeth and really am concerned why i have this. Please help!!!
I would ask you new dentist if he placed a base down before filling the cavity. I always have a base placed before every filling for the same problems you are stating. I would give them a call and see if they did place a base if not, I would have the filling redone again. Sorry.
Thanks,

I had a tooth in the bottom rear filled Monday dentist said it was deep I’m having lots of pain throbbing badly even making my ear hurt I can take room temperature water and old it back there and it stops the pain . I went back to dentist on Friday because of the pain and they adjusted bite and X-ray it but told me it was a deep filling that the nerve took some trauma it may take it longer to calm down and it does quit hurting but it hurts more than it doest and before I had the tooth filled it never hurt me at all why would water calm it down and stop the pain .
I had a deep filling in my wisdom tooth a week ago.i am still getting toothache now and again throughout the day. Will it take time to settle or should I go back to the dentist
If the pain is not constant that is a good sign that things should calm down. You could take some ibuprofen to help with the discomfort. If the pain gets worse and is constant I would call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
I got a filling two weeks ago it hurt on the top and bottom and sometimes towards the front the filling was in the very back and it was deep I went back and he adjusted my bite because it was two high it’s been two days and it is still hurting a little less but not much less it is constant and very sensitive to cold
It’s a good sign that your tooth is hurting less, I would give it another week and then see how it’s feeling. With a high bite think of it as some punching you 24/7 you would have a bruise so it’s going to take some time for things to calm down. Keep in contact with your dentist if the sensitive gets worse.

I had a filling done close to the gum line last week Tuesday. The tooth never bothered me until now. I know my gums are torn up from the filling but the tooth itself has a dull ache to it. My dentist said it was a small cavity yet the filling she placed is huge. It has been a week since the filling was done. Do I call my dentist?
I would call your dentist to let them know you are having sensitivity. Your dentist said the filling was small because it probably was not a deep filling which would be a good sign probably not close to the nerve. You can try rinsing with warm salt water to help the gum tissue and try sensitive toothpaste. Ibuprofen can also help with the discomfort.
Thanks WFDC Team
my filling came out old one
dentist out composite on 1hour after this happened, no shot.involved. its day 5 now. pain has lessened. but bite feels off on right side. smalldull pain?
I would call your dentist and have them adjust the bite it sounds like it’s off. I would take some ibuprofen until you can see your doctor.

Hi, I had a filling done in second upper premolar a few months ago. The tooth became sensitive to heavy pressure and I had discomfort in the inner gum at the tooth too. Upon X-ray I had decay close to the nerve. Dentist removed decay and filled tooth, the filling was fairly large. I was having pressure pain upon heavy pressure weeks later, dentist adjusted filling to remove high spots. While I have no constant pain and can use the tooth to eat/chew , the tooth still doesn’t respond well to pin point heavy pressure, such as eating hard pizza crust. Can you shed any light on what may be the issue please? I’d rather avoid a root canal if not necessary
If the decay was close to the nerve even just a pin hole would cause problems. You can wait to see if things get better, but you may need a root canal to solve the problem.
Thanks,

I got 7 fillings done 1 month back. Nothing was in pain everythg was fine. 2 weeks ago 1 down filling started paining even though the bite aas aju. I visited another dentist and he said that the filling is overdone and so it pains. It ll continue to pain on & off for almost 30secs due to overfilling. It does pain on off like he said. What should i do? Get it redone or jus wait for 1 more month for it to settle and stop??? Confused plz help
I would get the filling redone if it’s not filled correctly. Do not put up with the sensitivity.
Thanks, WFDC Team
I had a tooth on the back filled 3 weeks ago went back to get the bait adjust and went back and he prescribed antibiotic and that was better now the pain is back all week I could shew on that side my jaw and my ear hurt 2 days ago that getting better is the pain gone coming back because the last visit he told me I need a root canal I don’t know what to do my prochaine appointment for root canal is the 30 of this months
I think with your symptoms you will need a root canal, in order for the tooth calm down.
Thanks,
WFDC Team
I had 2 fillings done on the lower back of my mouth. The fillings were not properly done and hurting when chewing. Another dentists redid one. It felt so much better. When I came back 2 weeks after to redo the other filling, she accidentally redid the same one that she did 2 weeks ago!! I basically got 3 fillings done on the same tooth in 4 months! My tooth feel very sensitive! I can eat and chew but my tooth feels heavy and sensitive. Will it go away or did she damage my tooth?!!
Your tooth should calm down, it’s had a lot of trauma in the last few months. It’s a good sign the tooth is not hot and cold sensitive. You can also try chewing on the other side for a few day to give that side a rest.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had some feeling done like 3weeks ago. and im heaving so much pain on them. i went back to dentist and he said everything was okay. that is i didn’t have an infection nor nothing. But something has to be wrong. they sholdn’t hurt like that. HELP please
Did your Dentist check the bite? That can cause a lot of pain if you are hitting those filling first. Take some ibuprofen to help with the pain. Ask your Dentist if he placed a base down before the fillings were placed, if not you may want to have them redone with a base. Down side to having them redone is you have to get numb again and pay for the base to be placed. In the future I would remind your Dentist that you always want a base placed for every filling being done no matter how small.
Thanks WFDC Team
Had a filling done 4 weeks ago. Top left 2 molars. The one was sensitive to pressure two days after the filling, took some ibuprofen and it went away. 3 weeks later its back. But only when i bite on foods. Not sensitive to hot or cold. If i press on the filling with my nail i can only feel one piece being sensitive where it lines up with my adjacent teeth the rest of the filling is good. Any advice?
Hello, I had three fillings put in at the beginning of dec. I felt some pain when chewing and sensitivity so I went back to my dentist. Who readjusted the height of the fillings.
This was three weeks ago, the pain and sensitivity has become a lot less and on some days I don’t even notice it. But I still get some pain when eating, not a lot. There is no swelling and the pain is not sharp and does go away when I take painkillers. The sensitivity does not linger.
Do you think I need root canal treatment? Not sure what do next. Just wondering if the fillings need time.
I think things are on the mend all your signs are good sensitivity doesn’t last and hot and cold is not bothering you. I do not think you are in need of a root canal unless your tooth becomes sensitive to hot or cold and the pain doesn’t go away.
Thanks WFDC Team
Many thanks for your reply. I will give it a few more weeks and see how I get on. The pain when eating is really just on the first bite or so but after that it doesn’t feel too bad.
Sorry one last question do you think I should avoid chewing on that side to give things time to settle? I have also got into the habit of biting down on my teeth to see if the pain is still there. I guess that’s not helping?
You can try for a few days to do most of your heavy chewing on the other side to give the ligament a rest. If your are clinching your teeth at night that could be contributing to the problem you may want to talk to your dentist and see if you are a candidate for a night guard. During the day when you are not chewing and your jaw is in a relax state your teeth are not together or they are lightly touching, if your are biting hard together you are stressed and should get a night guard to help relax the muscles. Hopefully this will help.

Hi!
I’ve had 5 fillings done at the dentist in the last 8 days. The one 8 days ago required 1 very deep filling, 1 medium and 1 small on the lower left jaw. The one 3 days ago required 2 medium on the right lower jaw. After the first appointment I felt IMMENSE pain it was awfully sensitive to everything and anything. This settled down by the time the second appointment came around. When I had the second appointment on the right side I had incredible jaw pain after and yesterday experienced swollen lymph nodes predominantly on m left side. I visited my dentist yesterday who performed 2 x-rays, tapped all my teeth to check if I’d flinch (which I didn’t) checked all my gum lines and informed me that he believed the teeth were all okay and that the swollen neck may be from something else!
Is this normal? Yesterday I woke up in the middle of the night at like 4 am with incredible tooth pain.. I took ibuprofen then it went away within 20 mins or so. Throughout the day I don’t seem to experience much pain, if I do, I take ibuprofen and the pain goes for the rest of the day. The left side is still very sensitive to the cold, but not heat?
What should I do? It’s the first time ive ever woken up in the night with pain! I’m not sure if I grind my teeth in the night? I wouldn’t really know??
The pain really goes away when I take ibuprofen almost in it’s entirety it’s really odd. Do you think my dentist is wrong and I may need a root canal or?
Hi, I had two fillings replaced on my two front teeth (these teeth have root canal). One feels ok the other feels swollen/fatter (Sorry that’s the only way I can think of describing it!) Pretty much straight away my jaw felt different like it was misaligned. I would describe it more as extreme discomfort than pain. It is also affecting my ears. It is now 4 weeks and no improvement.
I would call your dentist and explain what is going on 4 week is a long time with no improvement. Since the teeth have had root canals did your dentist take an x-ray of those teeth before doing new filling? You may have an infection at the end of the root which could explain the feeling of a fat and swollen tooth. The tooth can be saved but your dentist may refer you to an Endodontist. In the mean time you can take some ibuprofen to help with the pain.

Hi,
So I got a filling in September and about a month ago it started to hurt only when I chew food on that side. I thought it could be the nerve so I used sensodyne and waited it out for a couple of weeks. It was still hurting and I just went to the dentist to get it checked out. He was in a rush and could only examine it from how it looks and feels from the outside. He told me due to the filling being on the molar right before the wisdom tooth (all four still coming in) he believes that the problem is my wisdom tooth and that I should get it removed. Months ago he told me my wisdom teeth were coming in fine and now all of a sudden this one probably slanted? He never took an X-ray to really see so I don’t know. I thought that because its just hurting when I chew food and not when bite down it could have been the nerve and I might just need a root canal, but I don’t know. He said I can wait it out to see how it turns out and gave me a referral if I want to do the removal, but he thinks the best option is to remove both wisdom teeth on that side. But I am not sure and I wanted a second opinion before I do anything.
I would get a second opinion with an oral surgeon and they will take a pano or a 3D image. The wisdom can cause a lot of pain if they are hitting on the tooth next to it.
Your doctor should have taken the time with you if the filling was not deep it may just need a base placed down before the new filling. Did they check the bite to make sure it was not high? All it may need is a bite adjustment. If the bite is high think of it as someone punching you in your arm 24/7 it would be very bruised, that would be the same for the ligament around your tooth. So hopefully he checked that at least.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello,
In December I got two fillings placed my bottom back two molars. I was having bad tooth sensitivity on one of the teeth. I went in and got my filling corrected on that bite. I have mild sensitivity to cold on the very back tooth and now my gums feel sensitivity as well around that tooth. That tooth didn’t have a adjustment on it. Doesn’t hurt when I eat or anything maybe some slight discomfort if I bite a certain way. Could my bite be off on that tooth?
I would get your bite checked again and have the gum tissue looked at.
Thanks, WFDC Team
hey I got a filling done like 5 days Ago they fixed the decay by drilling or something but then I didn’t feel anything for 3 days I had food cold and hot water and I brushed my teeth but now I feel pain that’s it its on and off and my decay was closer to the nerve so what should I do? I called my doc she said its normal but I don’t know this couldn’t be normal cause it hurts on and off…. pain comes than stays for a few mins than goes away.
Had a filling done one month ago was getting pain when bite down got it adjusted and biting downs better but gum hurts when eating certain foods like meat and have slight sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers a bit but wouldn’t say it was painful at all just weird feeling and no pain whatsoever if not eating
It’s a good sign that the pain doesn’t linger, but if the pain start to be more constant I would call you dentist and let them know. For the gum irritation rinse with warm salt water and try not to eat hard foods on that side for a few day to let the tissue heal.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello , I got my tooth filled premolar one and after a month I am having severe pain and my whole right side inside is paining . When I try to join my teeth it feels like there is something between it with triggers the pain for that period. I wanted to extract my teeth but don’t know what to do .
Do not extract your tooth I think all you may need a bite adjustment. Call you dentist have them take an Xray and check the bite.
If that did not help calm the tooth down, then they could replace the filling and put a base down before the new filling to protect the nerve .
If none of this helps you may need a Root Canal and crown which would be better than loosing the tooth.
Thanks,
WFDC Team
I have to have 17 teeth filled on the gum line. I started monday and they filled 4 teeth. My # 18 she said needs to be extracted but she filled it anyway. I had been keeping temp filling in it prior to the dentist. I have had some throbbing pain on and off since in my entire mouth. But this morning I wake up and it’s like I can’t touch my teeth together if I do it hurts extremely bad. Will this go away?
I would call your dentist since the filling was not on the biting surface, so your bite should not be off. As for tooth #18 if you were just putting a temporary filling in and your dentist filled it with a permanent fill which seal it up not letting any infection drain out causing a lot of pressure. Your dentist should have left it alone or extracted it because it sound like the decay was into the nerve. I would not pay for that filling and an extraction too. The remaining fillings I would have your dentist place a base down before the fillings, which should help with the sensitivity. You might want to brush with a sensitive toothpaste to help calm things down.
Thanks WFDC Team
Sorry about the delay in answering
I have been told I have abrasions on many of my teeth. And another dentist said receding gums. Will you tell me the difference?
Also I had 1 tooth filled in with composite filling because of a abrasion in it. The tooth felt ok for a week. But know it hurts a lot. Hurts around the gum near the tooth. It is the canine tooth and the filling is on the check side. It has not felt right since it was done. And also like my body just is trying to free itself from the filling. Like my mouth wants to push it off from the actual canine tooth. I aldi have sensitive guns near that tooth and near the tooth next to it. Would appreciate to know your thoughts
I went to the dentist 2 months ago and I git a shot so she can do my filling now my jaw bone us still sowllen and its causing pain in my tooth
I would try massaging the area and warm compress to the area. You could also chew gum for light weight exercise to work the muscle, but do not go to town on the chewing. Ibuprofen can help. I would also contact your dentist to see what they to say.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello, I had an upper back tooth extraction 4 weeks ago. On a tooth that was cracked and infected and took full round of antibiotics. The numbing injection had epinephrine which not sure why, caused a reaction to my heart and I had to be on oxygen the entire procedure. I felt pretty decent afterwards and was on high dose ibuprofen. Then, 2 weeks later (2 weeks ago, I had 3 fillings done on the bottom straight from the tooth that was extracted. These were all 3 done deep along the gum line and at an angle. The numbing medication(no epinephrine this time of courses) was administered 2 times because it didn’t seem to be numbing effectively but the second time it really worked well. I was having jaw pain and was taking ibuprofen but now it is turning into excruciating pain. It varies to throbbing, shooting dull aching cramping on and off at least once a day and lasts for hours. It seems to be getting worse. Ibuprofen stops the pain but the pain is getting more frequent and worse in intensity. It hurts in my face, jaw, ear, throat, gland and wraps around my jawline into the front bottom tooth. I went back to the dentist to get it checked he tapped and did an ice testing didn’t think there was much going on. Told me to not chronically take ibuprofen. And recommended an expensive mouth guard. I do seem to clench teeth at night and have the missing tooth that throws off balance. And to give it some time. I am terrified this pain is getting worse by the day especially now while lying down.. I’m worried this is a more serious issue like nerve damage. Please help, any suggestions appreciated!
I had 4 fillings 2 days ago. I was having a throbbing dull not severe pain before the fillings. It’s not a horrible pain but enough to keep my attention. After the fillings the pain is throbbing but only last a few seconds or minutes then goes away. It’s not a constant pain. I just can’t pinpoint exactly where in my mouth it’s is. Do you think I need a root canal or is it it just my body healing and will go away
I think you are having normal healing. The nerve has to adjust to being worked on and having a new filling. It’s a good sign that the pain doesn’t linger. I would take some ibuprofen for a few day until it calm down. Sigh to watch for constant pain and hot and cold sensitivity that will not go away, would be a strong indicator you may need a root canal.

Hi, I had a small cavity filled just over 3 weeks ago. It hurt a lot after the freezing were off but settled down to sensitivity to cold and heat and a sharp pain everytime I floss that settles into a dull throb. The same dentist filled a cavity a few years ago and left part of my face frozen for over a year afterwards. I’m actually a bit afraid to go back to the same dentist at this point. At least when my face was frozen there wasnt any pain, even if my smile was lopsided…
Ive never experienced either before with other dentists. Now between the fear and pain I’m pretty sure giving up on this particular dentist is the best move. (I’m a pretty indecisive person so I thought about it when i couldnt feel my face and again now that I’m in pain, but i really really really hate pain so that’s the final impetus)
Anyway, do you have any advice on questions I can ask a new dentist to avoid the same situation again?
Or was I just super lucky for the first 30ish years and this sort of thing is normal and to be expected?
Thanks for any advice, seriously its 130am and I’m in pain so yep any advice would be awsome:)
I would let the new dentist know about the other doctor problem giving you a shot to numb the area. Along with you being left numb for a year. The dentist is getting the nerve directly, they try to miss the nerve while injecting so this info will help a new dentist. I’m think your bite may be off and you may just need your bite adjusted. For a bite adjustment you should not have to get numb. Try taking some ibuprofen at night to help with the pain. You may also need a night guard. If you are under a lot of stress, you may be clinching at night. With Covid19 everyone is under some sort of stress and yours may be causing you to clinch without knowing you are doing it.
Thanks, WFDC Team
teeth is sensitive so you don’t bit metal or sense too hot too cold. sensitive teeth is a safety thing. it means your teeth is in decay. so only solution is a ‘crown’
fillings are like using glue to fix hole in your tire. or putting glue in cracked concrete or using crazy glue to glue cracked glass or porcelain. it’s never as strong before the ‘crack’
cracks in your teeth is from teeth decay which weakens the teeth and bacteria enter the cracks and make it larger and infecting or irritating the nerves, the sensitivity is to notify you you have ‘crack in your teeth. ideal solution is ‘crown’ fillings overtime will require a crown. Dental plans don’t cover crowns cause it’s too expensive like $1000-$2000 whereas filling is couple of hundred.
fillings don’t last especially in molars teeth.
Dentist only perform fillings in molar teeth because patients don’t want to spend $1200-$2000 for a crown and most dental plans don’t pay 100% for crowns or none at all.
A filling cost about $200 whereas a crown is $1000 more so most people don’t want to spend the money and think a filling is sufficient.
Ideally for molar teeth, a crown is ‘recommended’ as fillings will crack on molar teeth and is like glueing a cracked ceramic cup. it’ll hold for couple of months but will crack after constant useags and chemicals or cavities again
solution: get crown for molar teeth. it’s $1000 more but it last a lifetime and that teeth is protected for life.
Sensitive teeth is just nervers in your teeth to sense hot, cold, or hard objects entering your mouth, sensitive teeth is from evolution, hard rocks and hot water don’t belong in your teeth. chewing hard rocks, teeth sensitivity is a good thing. not a bad thing. it’s tells you something is wrong with your teeth or something should not be in your mouth like too hot or too cold water or hard objects that you can swallow.
get crown for molar teeth and the sensitivity should go away..
Anything over the counter I can use?
If you are experiencing sensitivity from treatment, you should contact your dentist for evaluation. In regard to your question, he or she may recommend an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication for use. Thank you for your question.
Best regards,

I had a filling done years ago. It was deep but successful. However of late I have been traveling more and the said tooth is now extremely sensitive to hot and cold drink. The tooth is even sensitive when I bit down on at times. I was placed on antibiotics and ibuprofen. I would like to get the procedure done home but I would only be able to return in 9 weeks. Can I wait that long with these symptoms?
Hopefully the antibiotics will help your tooth calm down until you get home. I sound like you need a root canal? If you are in the US and the location of the affected tooth starts to swell I would go see a dentist out of town and have them do what’s call an open and drain. Then you can wait to see your dentist. If you do not swell up, then it’s will be up to you to decide on how much pain you are in if you want to seek treatment elsewhere.

Hi I got my left last bottom tooth filled I never had pain before now throbbing pain and I cant chew on it why? Should I tell the dentist ouch…:(
Yes call your dentist you probably need to have your bite adjusted. The doctor’s do their best to adjust the bite while you are numb but cannot tell if the bite is off. It may have felt like it was great to you, even though it was off. Take some ibuprofen to help with the pain I’m sure the ligament around the tooth is inflamed and bruised from a high bite.
Thanks WFDC Team
Having a small degree of sensitivity after having fillings done is normal, but from what you are saying you need to make an appointment and get the tooth evaluated. Call us at 360-254-5254.
Hi just had a filling done yesterday and it was close to a nerve my annastetic worn off but I’m getting the same type off pain from my mouth that I went in for and I’m 18+ weeks pregnant is this normal or shud I phone them
Your tooth will be sensitive for a few day just because it was worked on. I would call your dentist by Friday if it’s still bothering you. You may need a bite adjustment or a root canal but discuss this with your dentist. You should be ok to take ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
You can’t take ibuprofen while your pregnant
I would get your OBGYN doctor opinion to be safe.

Hello, I had filling in my tooth yesterday which was near to the nerve. There was no pain before filling or treatment. But since my tooth was filled i have having severe pain in my tooth along with sensitivity. Should i go back to my dentist or wait for a week ? Thank you in advance
Since it such a new fill in you can take ibuprofen for a week to see if that helps otherwise see your dentist. You may need a root canal.

Hello, I had filling infront of molar tooth 3 days ago near to the nerve with very little exposure. I had pain in first day along with pain in my ear and neck nerve. in second day it was decreased. Now, i am having pain in that tooth which is 2 steps ahead of the filled tooth also my ear and neck are paining. Any suggestions for this?
You can take ibuprofen to help with the pain. I would call your dentist and have them check the area to see if something else is going on.
Thanks WFDC Team

I had a filling done 5 days ago the dentist said it was deep! However since having it done my tooth has started to ache and feel like some sort of pressure pain is this normal?
With the filling being deep you could need a root canal. If you are not hitting that tooth first the bite should be ok. I would watch for hot and cold that will not go away. Some sensitivity is normal after a filling and Tylenol should take care of the pain. I would call you dentist if the sensitivity persists.
Thanks, WFDC Team
i had a filling done on my front tooth a week ago it only hurts when i eat or drink something hot. it dosent hurt right away it takes a few seconds to hit me but when it starts it hurts pretty bad and it lasts for a few seconds than it goes away i have no other pain not to cold or anything else should i be worried? My dentist is out of town for a week should i seek out another one or is this normal
You need to call your dentist and have them exam the tooth and see what is causing the issue.
Hi!
I had a filling replaced 2 weeks ago. Since then, I’ve had sensitivity to pressure, but only when biting on hard foods like nuts or cereal. The discomfort only lasts a couple of seconds then fades away. Prior to having the filling replaced, I had no issues with this tooth. I returned to the dentist on Tuesday and they redid the filling again. The dentist said the cavity wasn’t deep at all. Now, the sensitivity is less, but still present with hard foods. Do you think this sensitivity should fade over time? How long should I wait before returning?
Thanks in advance.
I think the sensitivity should go away with time especially since you just had the filling replaced. I would take some ibuprofen to see if that helps the sensitivity and pressure. If thing do not continue to improve call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi Christina,
Did yours feel better with time? I’ve had fillings done for the first time which are not deep at all but I’m sensitive to hard and crunchy foods. It’s been 2 months. Please reply!
I had a filling replaced that was cracked and they put new one on. He said it was small and my tooth was fine. No need for root canal. Even though I was numb I was feeling him drill on a nerve and it hurt so bad. It has been a week and it hurts to chew. I can still kind of feel that nerve pain under the tooth if that makes sense. I have such sensitive teeth anyways. I can’t put pressure on it but doesn’t really hurt with hot or cold. I feel pain in other teeth around it. Could it just still need time to calm down and heal?
It may take some time for the teeth to settle down after a filling. In the future you can ask your dentist to place a base down, if your teeth are normally sensitive this will help with the duration of sensitivity if you have any at all.
When you bite together make sure you are not hitting that tooth first, if you are call your dentist to have the bite adjusted. Some times when you are numb your bite can be off without knowing it. It a good sign hot and cold is not bothering you. Try some Tylenol to help with the pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi, i just had a deep filling 4 days ago. Yesterday at night, my filled tooth was so hurt. There is jaw pain and ear pain. There are times when it doesnt hurt and it does hurt. What should i do?
I would contact your dentist and see if it may just need the bite adjusted. If the pain persist you may need a root canal since it was a deep filling.
You could also try Ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling done yesterday afternoon. (Was a deep cavity according to my dentist). Last night started getting pain in the tooth that actually woke me up. Like a shock nerve type pain that comes and goes. There is no pain when I eat something also no hot/cold sensitivity either. Got the same type of shock pain in that tooth again. Is it normal after the filling to experience this? My dentist is closed for the weekend. I will only be able to call on Monday.
It’s not uncommon for teeth to be sensitive right after a filling. Teeth do not like to be worked on that why we get them numb. It’s a good sign that your tooth is not hot and cold sensitive. If thing do not calm down in a few weeks call you dentist.
Thanks , WFDC Team
I have a question.. around 2 months ago I had two fillings redone.. never had a problem with my old fillings.. one had the silver filling the other composite but both were redone with composite filing,, but now they hurt only when i drink cold and hot liquids.. Did my my two teeth reject the new fillings? I can’t stand the feeling…
You need to call your dentist and have them exam the tooth to see what is causing the issue.
Had a filling 3 weeks ago and it is still hurting off and on
I’m think your teeth will calm down completely since you are not having constant pain. When it flares up take some ibuprofen. Make sure the new filling are not hitting first when you bite down, if they are you may need to have your bite adjusted. If the pain doesn’t go away call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello. I had a filling about 2 months ago and it was so close to the nerve. The pain after the filling on a scale was 10/10 now after 2 months is 7/10 (it hurts only when I eat). My dentist said I may need a root canal then I went to another dentist made a 3D x-ray and he said everything looks ok give some more time it will heal by itself. What should I do? Should I wait more time to heal or do a root canal(which is expensive for me) ?
You can wait for a while longer as long as you can stand the pain, but 2 months is a long time to be in pain. I would keep in contact with you dentist to let them know how you are doing but if you start to swell or you get a bump on the gum you will need a root canal. In mean time try ibuprofen to see if it helps with the pain. I’m assuming your dentist has checked the bite to make sure the filling is not high, if not I would have that checked.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi. Same here with a tooth filling done 6 weeks ago. Can not bite on the filling with even a little bit hard or crunchy foods. The pain have lessened over time but still it doesnt let me chew on that side. My doctor was no able to make a sensible comment. What have you done with your tooth?
Did your dentist check your bite? That’s where I would start with. With the pain going away over time I’m thinking you are not in to a root canal situation yet. If you do not feel comfortable with your dentist comment you can always go get a second opinion and see what they suggest.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi David,
Did yours feel better with time? I’ve had fillings done for the first time which are not deep at all but I’m sensitive to hard and crunchy foods. It’s been 2 months. Please reply!
My molar adult molar on the top on the left side I got a deep filling the doctor said I was lucky that it didn’t go any deeper she said if it gives you any more problems come back and I have to get a root canal because I would get this very sharp pain in my tooth and it stopped after I got the filling then I would brush the tooth and I would Eritrea the tooth everytime and keep in mind I’m 13 and I’m olmost getting a root canal what’s wrong with my tooth do I need a root canal or should I. Stop Eritatin it
Defiantly call your dentist for ongoing pain issues that have not decreased
hi i had my tooth done as a filling it feels wierd but i know its expected is it suppose to hurt a ilttle bit after all the work yesterday
New filling do take time to feel normal. You can take some ibuprofen to help things settle down. If the injection site sore rinsing with warm salt water will help with that. Pay attention to the bite if you are hitting the new filling first you may need a bite adjustment.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had fillings on the top in the back about 3 days ago and they hurt bad almost like a tooth ache they are fillings that was redone witch didn’t hurt before now hurt bad what am I to do I cannot take ibuprofen
I would call your dentist you may have a high bite and that can cause a lot of pain. So you may be looking at just a simple bite adjustment. I would also ask them if they put a base down before placing the new filling. If not you could wait a few weeks to see if the teeth calm down. If the teeth are still sensitive you may want to consider having them redone with a base. You should only be charge for the placement of the base. In the future I would have a base placed before every filling. For now Tylenol will help with the pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a very small (not deep) filling done 3 weeks ago on a bottom molar. For the last two weeks it has been rather sensitive to cold or VERY hot liquids (like piping hot coffee). The pain lasts a few seconds then goes away. However, because this tooth is close to my bad side (I have bad tmj and my one side is always sore) I find it feels like the pain lingers into my jaw a bit.
I wear a mouth guard on the bottom at night and I’ve noticed it hurts a tiny bit when I bite down on it.
My dentist said it’s not too high, but that she thinks the constant clenching and grinding at night is prolonging healing…which is why I’m experiencing sensitivity. Could this be causing the sensitivity to hot and cold? Is it correct that TMJ pain can be “triggered” by a sensitive tooth?
If the pain only last a few seconds from hot and cold that is a good sign. I’m thinking all the pain in the jaw is due the TMJ. The TMJ was irritated when you had the filling done. You were open for a long time getting the work done and the anesthetic is given way back there to do a lower block. You can put wet warm compress on that area and eat softer food until things calm down. Keep in contact with your Dentist if things do not improve.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling done last week and it’s been hurting none stop since I got it done sometimes it only bothers me but lately it’s just pain and pain none stop im so scared to do the rootcanal does it hurt? If I get it would it have to heal for me to get my braces I suppose to get them Thursday?
After the completion of a filling, teeth may be hot, cold, or pressure sensitive, which is completely normal and known as pulpitis. Anytime a tooth undergoes the trauma of being drilled and restored, the nerve can become agitated and produce sensitivity that can last for days to weeks. The risk of sensitivity is even greater if the decay in the tooth was deep and close to the nerve. If your tooth is sensitive, call your dentist. Your nerve may need greater time to calm down, or the tooth may need to be adjusted.
Hi I had a deep filling done 3 weeks ago, i get a dull toothache pain occasionally and it’s only sensitive to hot and cold food/drink occasionally. Is this something to worry about? Many thanks.
I would keep an eye on the hot and cold sensitivity if it starts to linger I would let your dentist know. This may indicate that the root is infected and you will probably need a root canal do not ignore your symptoms.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi,
I have done my filling 3 days ago in teeth number 47.. In first day it was paining and the pain went down to my ear and neck along with sensitivity. Now, my front tooth which is 1 tooth ahead of filled tooth is hurting.. and the sensation in filling is gone but my neck and ear are still in pain. I don’t know what to do . Please help.
Thanks in advance
I had a filling about a week ago and the pain still won’t go away. It hurt so badly. The pain medication and antibiotics I’m using doesn’t seem to have effect. My dentist is suggesting an extraction, but I don’t want it removed.
I got a filling last week I had an old filling from way back dentist said it was impacted and removed it to put a new one in on my upper right third back tooth when I eat or drink anything I get a strange senitve feeling that spread through my tooth and lasts for a while even when I’ve stopped eating and when it calms down I can still feel a thriving slight sensitive pain in deep even though its not terrible tooth ache it hurts should I wait a while to see if it improves or contact my dentist right away.
Your nerve may need greater time to calm down, or the tooth may need to be adjusted. If the tooth over time is not calming down call you dentist.
I meant a throbing feeling (err)
I had two tooth fillings on May 6th. I was informed one had severe tooth decay and they had to drill deep. I had a high bite, which I had corrected days later. The bite is still not perfect, but better than before. My tooth ache is daily. I’m taking ibuprofen and numbing gel daily. As of this week, I’m having problems opening my mouth wide, still having sensitivity with warm and cold drinks, but most concerning, the shooting pain is going from my tooth, to my jaw, to my neck down to my arm. What do I do? Why is this happening? Please advise.
I would contact your dentist and have them do further evaluation. You may need a root canal since it was deep decay it was probably close to the nerve. If your tooth is infected then it will cause the nerve to act up letting you know something is going on.
Thanks WFDC Team
Thankyou I will contact my dentist tomorrow this advice was very helpful.
I had a filling and it’s been 5 months when I eat anything hard such as chips nuts and crispy stuff It get hurts, and I’ve see my doctor for that reason and he said everything looks normal and he doesn’t know why I’m feeling that way, I’m so tired of this I don’t know what else I can do, btw he replaced an old filling to new one if that matters. Any suggestions?
Hi Lina,
Did yours feel better with time? I’ve had fillings done for the first time which are not deep at all but I’m sensitive to hard and crunchy foods. It’s been 2 months. Please reply!
Hi a had a filling a month and a been hurting and then I went back to the dentist and he adjust my back teeth and my front teeth yesterday and I still in pain what should I do .Should I brush my teeth what is good for me to do.
Brush very gently in the area that is sensitive, if the sensitivity continues after a couple of days please call your dentist.
I had been having a dull ache on my tooth which was hard to pin point which one. The dentist said the xrays didn’t show anything that should cause pain. Cavities were small and I could wait to fill them again. I got the 4 fillings today. Three on top and one on bottom. The bottom one doesn’t hurt but the top three hurt a lot. He said they were deep fillings which he didn’t think they would be based on the xrays. It doesn’t feel sensitive to cold or hot. Just very sore constantly. How long will it take to stop? It was done 7 hours ago.
I would take some ibuprofen to help with the discomfort. Teeth do not like to worked on that’s why we get them numb to work on. It’s a good sign that they are not hot can cold sensitive. Things should calm down In a few days or so if the pain gets worse call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi, my teeth is paining since last night and the whole day. I removed one last year. Now I was wondering, is it possible to do the filling while I have this pain, or should i just remove it once. I am afraid to remove it cause I will end up not having teeth.
You need to check with your dentist to about the tooth in question. If you are having pain with an area it could be that tooth or another.
Great help Harold
I had a small cavity on my back wisdom tooth. The dentist filled it. This was September 1 2015. Since then I have had pain and sensitivity. Not only in that tooth, but surrounding teeth. Can the wisdom tooth cause all these problems. I went in for two adjustment, and neither have worked.
Definitely call your dentist, it might be a different tooth causing the issue.
Ever since getting a few fillings I’ve been having a deep, sharp ache radiating through my entire jaw and causing headaches. I’m extremely cold sensitive, it hurts to breathe through my mouth. Pressure on that side of the myth seems to aggravate the aching over time but doesn’t produce any sharp, shooting pains. I’ve re-visited my dentist and he has lowered the fillings but it hasn’t helped. At this point I’m pretty desperate to have it resolved, any idea what’s going on?
It could be that decay has reached the nerve and the tooth may need a root canal. I would contact your dentist again for the ongoing issue.
In reference to the woman having headaches and face pain, I had this several years ago and after several specialty dental appts, an ENT visit and a CAT scan, I had a sinus infection.
I had a filling last week in a broken tooth with an old filling. I am having pain up to my eyeballs so bad that the OTC pain med is not relieving it completely. It hurts to touch the tooth with my tongue. I will call the dentist after the weekend is over. Thanks for the responses to others, I know what I need to do.
I had a filling yesterday on two of my back teeth last night one on the right was in pain and now my other one is having shooting pains from it I have read to wait a few days to see if it gets better but what do you tink I should do?
Your nerve may need time to calm down, or the tooth may need to be adjusted. If the tooth over time is not calming down call you dentist
But the one on my right is fine now
Ive just had a filling and its now hurting and its cold what should I do
Are you saying it is sensitive to cold?
I had a hole in my tooth and they filled it but when the numbness warn off the tooth pain came back,is this normal
Your nerve may need time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. If the tooth over time is not calming down then call you dentist for further evaluation
My dentist replaced a chipped filling on #4 leaving a large food trap. 2 years it caused bleeding. I went to a dentist who filled #5 to close it. It wasn’t a deep filling. I began feeling a lot of sensitivity to cold, hot, air, and touch. I couldn’t tell if it came from #4 or #5 as both felt sensitive. Especially in the area between both teeth (back of 5 and front of 4). Dentist told me i just had irritated gums. After a couple weeks of the same i went to another dentist who said it may be a bond issue and redid the filling. Nothing changed, still had a lot of the same sensitivity to cold & hot sensitivity that feels like spreading. The sensitivity lasts a few seconds but my gum remains feeling sore/irritated. Also the gum looks darker around both teeth. I was desperate and sensodyne rapid relief is the only thing that has helped me be able to drink and eat but the sensitivity is still there only diminished. If i do not use it, the area feels really irritated/sore for awhile. My floss also shreds at the top of #4 and my gum in between feels too open and off? I don’t know what to go do at this point as my dentist dismisses me.
I sound like the filling did not cover the exposed dentin of the tooth, which could cause all the sensitivity. The filling doesn’t have a good contact with a gap between the teeth and the filling was left with an overhang that is shredding your floss. I would talk with someone who likes their dentist and get another opinion of what is going on they should take a new Xray. I would get a new dentist. In the mean time rinse with warm salt water for the gum tissue issue and continue with the sensitive toothpaste.
Thanks, WFDC Team
I got a filling a couple weeks ago and it started to hurt 3 days ago my cheek is starting to hurt what should I do
Definitely call your dentist, it might be a different tooth causing the issue or the tooth may have something else going on.
I had a filling last month that was hurting and continued to hurt more as time went on. Now it hurts with cold and heat and it throbs and I get sharp pains throughout the day. The pain makes me want to cry, what should I do?
Your nerve usually needs time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. If it has been over a month I would contact your dental provider for further evaluation.
I had a front tooth filled last week and I can’t stand to bite down or eat on it , it throbs and hurts so bad I’ve been eating over the counter Tylenol like candy . Is this normal ? What should I do ?
I would call your dentist you may just need a bite adjustment. Until you get in I would take Ibuprofen it will help with the pain and inflammation.
Thanks WFDC Team

got a filling done today, not too deep but every time my cheek even slightly comes away from it it hurts and it hurts when ive just got my teeth sitting normally??
The filling may need to be adjusted. I would contact your dental provider for further evaluation.
I had a filling just a few hours ago. The anesthesia wore off and now my tooth aches, even when there is no pressure being applied. Is this normal?
Your nerve usually needs time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. If the pain persists contact your dental provider.
I had a temporary filling 4 days ago as I had a cracked(only half a tooth) at the top (back) it had been like this for some time prior to temporary filling. Since having the filling it’s very painful I can’t eat or drink on that side of my mouth and it’s even painful to touch the back of the tooth that has been filled. What could be wrong??
Your nerve usually needs time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. If the pain persists contact your dental provider.
I had 12 fillings done and a removal on November 13 2015. Around November 25 I developed a head cold which turned into a sinus infection. Is it related that my gums, teeth and jaw are killing me.or is something more serious going on.
Your nerve usually needs time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. You really need to contact your provider and check with them.
So about a month ago I got two filling one on each side of my mouth from a new dentist I’ve been seeing now. The filling on the right side do sent hurt but on my left side it hurts when I drink or eat something cold, and it’s been in pain for a month I’ve gone back once to talk to my dentist about the pain and all he said was I was going to have some sensitivity for awhile. What should I do?
Your nerve usually needs time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. Keep in contact with your provider and check with them.
I got three fillings two days ago. One on top and two on the bottom right where they are close to my wisdom tooth coming in. The bottom two have just started hurting for some reason and it won’t go away. Should I be worried? Or is this normal
I would call your dentist and have them check the bite and take some ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
I got a filling when they cleaned out my decay . it been like 4 weeks or less and it hurts out of no were . Soon much , it is like a throbbing pain and I don’t know what to do . I have a dentist apoiment but I don’t know of I can go because I have to pay for it so I’m what to do to make the pain stop??
Call your provider and see if they can recommend over the counter medications that would help.
Your nerve usually needs time to calm down, or the filling may need to be adjusted. You really need to contact your provider and check with them.
Hi I had pain on my tooth 47 , dentist said cavity very deep in the nerve , she said if I fill it , I will still have pain so she extracted it . was that the thing to do I feel bad I lost my tooth
I think the tooth could have been saved by doing a root canal and a crown. You can replace the missing tooth by doing a bridge if you have teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Another option could be an implant and crown.
Thanks, WFDC Team
Everybody needs to take a deep breath, for those who hardly understand what is going on, the basic message that is being said is…
No, you don’t need a root canal
but, after a filling that happened on a deep cavity tooth, there will be a lot of sensitivity meaning too hot or too cold will make your teeth hurt. This is because the deep tooth was so close to the nerve that it triggers a reactive pain. It is completely normal. Give it a couple of days to about a week or 2. In between the healing process, make sure to take only 1 tablet pill of Acetaminophen or Advil. Only 1 a day and only in the mornings please!!!! when you eat or drink, eat using the opposite side and avoid using that tooth. For drinking use a straw to help keep all liquid out of the hurting side. When you brush your teeth, placing water in your mouth will probably hurt. Use a straw when placing water in your mouth and use your tongue to block the hurting side of your mouth. Then ever night, place a tiny amount of toothpaste onto your tooth and rub gently around the tooth covering everything…you will also want to cover the gums surrounding the tooth as well to help the process go quicker, make sure to do so. If your pain hurts at night as well, I highly recommend rubbing toothpaste everywhere on the tooth and putting yourself In a warm environment. If the pain lasts longer than 2 and a half weeks, don’t worry, call your dentist and schedule an appointment, describe the pain and don’t forget to leave out any information at all, the right treatment is for the right pain;) in the meantime before your appointment, it’s also important to floss to keep the gums un sensitive.
• Brush after every meal
• Floss when you brush
• Rub toothpaste on the tooth every night
• take Advil 1x a day in the morning
• use a straw for inserting liquids
Sorry for you making this so long but it’s important for you all to know because I’m a dentist and it’s something that happened to me, you’re not alone 😉
Thanks guys, feel better soon
Thank you, Jocelynn! Great informative advice!
I just got three fillings today and only one else of the fillings that I got like every time I bite it feels like something cold falls through my tooth, is this normal
If I’m reading your message correctly there may be some sensitivity with one tooth. It may just need time to calm down. If it persists call your dentist for further diagnosis
Today I got a filling put in in this morning and I can’t chew food or bite down. My left lower back molars. My cheek and my jaw hurts. I already took over counter pain reliever around this afternoon. Last year I diagnosed with Tmj.
You should not be chewing on that side right away. If the tooth is still bothering your dentist may need may need and adjustment to the filling. Call your dentist.
I lost a filling it did not hurt. He filled it and I got my teeth cleaned. Now I can’t eat or drink floss we not go inbetweeen my tooth that he filled. That whole side top and bottom of my mouth is in pain. Why ? I go in next week to get a filling on the other. Should I or should go somewhere else.
It could be the tooth needs time to settle down, or the filling needs an adjustment. If the pain persists call your provider.
I had my molars filled in a couple of days ago and on the left side (which was the deeper side) whenever anything cold touches it, it hurts a lot. It feels like the pain is inside of my tooth, like under the fills. Any recommendations? Any medicine I can take to rid the sensitivity?
Not knowing your medical history we would not recommend over the counter medicine, you should call your provider for the best solution.
Hi I received 2 fillings at the beginning of January. It is now the end of April and it hurts more than ever. I can’t chew on it and it even hurts when I talk. I called and my dentist said she can’t do anything because my new insurance doesn’t kick in until June. She suggested I take ibuprofen and goody powders and just “wait it out” but it’s been 4 months!! What do I do? Is there anything seriously wrong? Any quick temporary fixes.
I would suggest calling you’re your provider that did the work to see if they can do a no charge consolation, the filling may need to be adjusted.
I had a cavity filled a year ago, i continued to have pain in my tooth off and on for a year. I was told that it was normal and not to worry. I went to a new dentist and found that the previous dentist did not get all of the decay out. He drilled my took and I was told it was deep and near the nerve. As the numbing wore off my tooth was screaming at my. It has only bee 12 hours since I had the work done. My tooth is still throbbing and achy. Do I wait it out over the weekend to see if my nerve just needs to settle down or do I call and go in for a root canal. I was even told that it would be hard to do a root canal on this tooth. Should I have them just pull it? It is my top left far back tooth. I believe they called it number 15.
Like any procedure, there is never a guarantee if will fix the problem. Everyone’s teeth react differently to procedures and it is really up to you on what you want to invest in saving that tooth. Talk to your provider to see what he thinks the chances are for saving the tooth.
Hi, I had my left lower molar filled two days ago due to a crack in my previous filling, which was placed a decade ago. Now, aside from sensitivity especially to cold foods, is it still normal that I experience throbbing pain whenever I eat and bite down on the recently filled tooth? I’m having difficulty eating because of this and I resorted to eating on my right side. I hope you can help me.
The decay may have been deep and it may take some time for the nerve get use to the new filling or it may need a root canal. I would contact your dentist and consult with them. It may only take adjusting the bit and time for things to calm down.
Hi I have 6 new cavitys and I had went to the dentist to fill them but one with one tooth I was already kinda of feeling that it was hurting or feeling something with one tooth before I filled the tooth and the dentist filled the tooth that I was filling on the one tooth it don’t hurt bad sometimes the feeling comes back
Sensitivity to cold can be normal for a few weeks, but chewing sensitivity can mean that the “bite” is too high and needs adjusted. Contact your provider.
I have gotten a fillin two weeks ago and I’m in a lot of pain from it to the point where I can’t sleep at night nor eat, which right now I can’t not sleep What should I do? Should I call back my dentist or ?
Definitely call the office. It should not be hurting like that 2 weeks later. The filling could need an adjustment and/or the nerve of the tooth tested for possible damage and further treatment needed.
Hi I got my cavity fix with a filling on June 2 and the cavity was by the dentin area of my teeth and it done hurt but sometimes I feel it like cold I think but with out drinking anything it just feels cold out of no where but the feeling comes and goes is that normal
New filling can be sensitive to cold for a few weeks as the nerve was probably close to the new filling. What usually happens is the nerve will shrink a little and the body develops its own protective insulation which will help with the cold sensitivity. If symptoms do not go away see your dentist.
Hello, I went to the dentist on November (7months)
And I still have pain, specially when I brush my teeth or drink any liquid. I went to the dentist and she adjusted (bite) so it didn’t hurt while I was biting (eating) the pain stopped for a couple days but it came back again.
I would go back to your dentist you may have a nerve issue. May need a root canal, 7 months is too long to be in pain.
Good luck,
the WFDC Team
I have had two silver fillings back left teeth and one silver filling in bottom left which needed a bottom? Not sure the term. But this was about 2-3 months ago. I have been experiencing some dull pain that comes and goes not often but it’s when I’m not eating or anything. It’s been more frequent lately. What can I do to stop the pain?
Call your dentist you may need a simple bite adjustment.
I had a cavity in my tooth. Dentist first said I may need root canal. I was traveling so he cleaned it and put something to settle down. When I visited her he did cavity filling instead of root canal. Cavity filling is hurting now.I don’t feel I have sensitivity to hot or cold. When I went to get the crown for cavity filling, I told it is hurting, he said he will continue with crown and then we will watch for few days and if it is still hurting then we may have to do root canal. It’s been 8 days, I still take a advil a day (gone down from 2). Is this common that you may need root canal after cavity filling. Do I need to pay again for root canal(I already paid for crown and cavity filling and now the root canal) now that dentist’s cavity filling did not work?
Yes you may need a Root Canal after a filling was placed because the decay may have been deep and close to the nerve. While decay at the time may not have gone into the nerve it was close enough to have already caused the damage. We would really consider doing the root canal before cementing the crown permanently but it can be done after wards. The down side is they will have to drill a hole in a new crown.
Hi, I had been having some intermittent mouth pain before my six month cleaning and had decided to wait till my.next cleaning until I then accidentally pulled an old filling out while flossing. I went in to the dentist and he put a new filling in. I’m still having the same symptoms. Pain in the mouth ear and neck and headaches. I called the dentist and they said it was normal and just called in pain meds. Should I have had an xray to see if anything else was going on? Which they didnt do. They made me feel pretty stupid. I have a very high tolerance for pain and I feel like something is being missed. Am I just crazy?
First you are not stupid, you always have to be your own advocate for your health. If they did not take an x-ray before they placed the new filling then yes something could have been missed and I would check with to see if they took x-ray. If pain lingers I would have them check the bite, if it’s too high that could cause everything to be off and can be causing the pain. Finally if the decay was close to the nerve you may need a Root Canal. I would check back in with your dentist for peace of mind and get to the bottom of things. There is no reason to live with pain.
Well I just had a two fillings done and one of the fillings hurts really really bad and also is very sensitive to almost everything. What would you recomend me to? Are there and medications I could take or what should I do. Because before the filling my toothwas perfectly fine, but after they did the filling I have had the wort aching ever it will not stop.
You can try OTC pain reliever to see if this will calm the teeth down. Sometimes new fillings just take time to settle down. Watch to see if the sensitivity lingers a long time after eating or drinking something if it does I would consult with your Dentist. Make sure you’re not biting on that tooth first, if you are then you may only need a bite adjustment.
I had two filling down but when u chew on them i feel pain. Like if you put a silver gum wrapper on your teeth and it touch a silver cavity. I have gone three time to my dentist and explain my pain and he tells me the filling is to high. He took exrays and he said it doesn’t show anything wrong. Can the filling be thin or do i need a root canal. Its already been a week.
I would see if the doctor can redo the fillings and place a base down before the filling is placed. From there if the teeth do not settle down then you may need a root canal.
Hi, I had a root canal done over a year now. I went Tuesday the 25,2016 and they redid the filling. After they did that my teeth have been killing me and the pain would go from my left side of my mouth the my ear and neck. They took the x-Ray after. It’s been hurting for 6 days now and I can’t take it anymore. I can’t sleep and nothing helps the pain go away. What should I do?
I would call the doctor to have them check the bite to make sure it’s not high, also see if a base was placed before the filling was done.
I got a filing at the beginning of the year, and now 7 months later the tooth where I got the filing is being really sensitive to hot or cold. Does this means that i need a root canal?
It does not mean it will need a root canal. The dentist will do some tests to check the nerve and how it responds. It is normal to have some sensitivity after a filling, even months later. There are several things that can cause this hot/cold sensitivity – clenching or grinding, a high bite, sinus problems/sinus infection, recession. It is common to have a “high bite” after the filling is placed. Since you are numb when it is checked , it is harder to get an accurate bite, so it may need adjusted later.
I recently had 4 cavities removed in my upper left molars and even though the pain in my teeth and most of my jaw pain has gone away, I’m still left with pain on my gums. Is this a side effect of getting fillings or should I see my dentist again?
If they filling were placed within the last week or so the gum tissue could be sore from the bands they use to hold the filling material in place. You could try using warm salt water rinses 2 x a day for a few day’s and see if things calm down, otherwise I would call your dentist and get his advice.
That is very nice information. Many dental patients feels the same, after removal of there tooth why they are getting pain. The tooth are sensitive and if decay was deep the sensitive tooth might great problems for nerves. Keep sharing your blog. Its very good to give solution to the patients dealing with dental problems.
Thanks for the nice comments.
Filling was done when my tooth wasn’t hurting, during eating and drinking it’s fine but when l sleep at night it hurts alot. Please what can l do to ease the hurt or will it stop soon?
I would check with your dentist I think the bite is high and you are clinching at night trying to get the bite correct.
Good Day… i had a filling done on August 07 2016. i am having a slight pain but when i bite on the tooth it stop hurts and they pain goes away for a while. its not paining alot but sometimes i does be uncomfortable. please can you guys suggest what i should do? should i wait longer to see if the pain will stop or should i visit the dentist?? am very scared of the dentist procedures 🙁
I’m thinking you just need a bite adjustment no needles will be used. The ligament are bruised from the bite being too high and when you bite down on the tooth you are putting pressure on the ligament which temporally relieves the ache.
Thank you for all the information and answers that you have provided here!
I’ve just had a deep cavity filled with temporary filing, and scheduled for a permanent filling in a week’s time. However, my dentist mentioned that if there is pain from within after the filling is done, the tooth needs to be taken out — and a root canal is not an option because the cavity has gone deep.
My question: why is it possible for regular permanent filling but not root canal? If the cavity is too severe for root canal, would the permanent filling work?
I would get a second opinion on the root canal with a Endodontist. I would not have it extracted until you get that second opinion because it doesn’t make sense you can have a filling but not a root canal and a crown to save the tooth. Root canal and crown would be cheaper in the long run rather than an implant and crown. You may not have enough bone to do the root canal and crown and a filling may just be buying you time before the tooth needs to be extracted?
Hi. I am not sure if I had the right thing done. I had a very deep composite filling. Dentist said it may need root canal. It was fine for 2.5 weeks. Then very painful intermittently. Sometimes after food and drink lingering other times on its own. Became sensitive at night at times and pain in my jaw and neck at times. My dentist gave antibiotics first which didn’t work. The pain just became more of a throbbing gnawing nature. Anyway I went to an emergency dentist as it was affecting sleep and I couldnt eat well. He did first stage of a root canal. I am wondering now if it could have been saved if the neve just needed more time. Too late now i guess any way!! Thank you so much for reading.
No you made the right choice when the tooth did not settle down. Only options at that point is a root canal or extraction. Next step is to finish the root canal and have a crown put on. The teeth become brittle once you have a root canal and can break.
Thank you very much!! Yes, most definitely will include a crown – and more regular check ups from now on!! I am going to look for another dentist to finish the work; I am not sure I should have been prescribed antibiotics; the emergency dentist said they do not help with pulpits.
You are very welcome and regular check ups are a wise choice.
I had a root canal done on 2nd last molar on top, I still have to get last treatment on it in a few weeks then another app for crown.. I still have really bad sharp nerve pain in that tooth, probs 4 times a day, very intense. can it be possible that you will still get really bad pain in that tooth until all the treatments are actually finished for the root canal? I also had a deep filling that was very close to the nerve on my bottom wisdom tooth, same side as root canal tooth about 2 months ago. I am also getting the same sharp jolt of pain on and off in that tooth as well. could it be the root canal tooth that is sending pain signals to the bottom wisdom tooth or am I looking at another root canal for the wisdom tooth as well? the most important question is until all the treatments are finished for a root canal tooth, can it still be really painful?
I would call your dentist to let them know what kind of pain you are in. You can still have pain in a tooth where the root canal is not finished, there could still be some nerve left in the canal. You can also have pain on the lower its call referred pain the nerves are so close together. For your lower tooth I would wait to see if you tooth calm down once your treatment Is complete on the upper tooth. With that said if the decay was close to the nerve on your wisdom tooth you may need a root canal on that tooth as well. Have you been taking Ibuprofen to help with the pain?
Thanks WFDC Team
thankyou for your reply. yes I have been taking pain meds, but doesn’t seem to help with the sharp nerve pain when it hits. guess I’m lucky it’s not constant, but it’s short and intense. but thankyou, will take your advice. I will wait till it’s finished as it may calm down after the 3rd cleaning treatment. it was a really bad tooth, so this is probs the case. thankyou for your time.
Hello, had a composite filling earlier today dentist said it was really deep and said he had to be careful so as not to reach the pulp. he called it a level 5 or so and a few or so minutes after i left the dentist i had a dull ache in that tooth and now its a throbbing ache want do i do . It really hurts
I would take some OTC pain medication tonight and see if your tooth settles down. Teeth are usually sensitive after work being done that’s why they numb the teeth to work on them. If your tooth is still hurting tomorrow I would call your dentist the decay may have already gotten to the nerve of the tooth and they may need to do a root canal and crown. I would see if the dentist placed a base before the composite filling was places. A base helps protect the nerve if the decay was deep, in the future you can always have a base put down to help with the sensitivity. We have a few patients where it’s noted in there chart to always place a base because their teeth are always sensitive to new fillings.
Hi I have a a question please, I had a filling over 5 months and till now it hurts when I chew hard food such as chips nuts crispy food especially when I just start eating, I went back to check the problem the doctor said I don’t see anything wrong with it and he didn’t know why I’m feeling that way he didn’t suggest the root canal cause he didn’t see any tea for that , I’m so tired of this, btw he replaced an old filling to new one if that matters, any suggestions please?
I got a filling in a tooth that never hurt and the dentist said it was close to nerve, that night it was sensitive and has been sensitive for a week mostly to cold and air, certain times it is sensitive even to touch, I chewed on side right away and I’m thinking I may have irritated it especially since I chew gum often, could tooth calm down and if irritated nerve can I live with sensitivity without getting root canal because I am allergic to antibiotics and I can’t extract because it is a front tooth, thanks
I would have your dentist check the bite on the filling first. The cold and air sensitivity should go away with time, but if heat starts to bother that tooth then you may have a nerve problem and would have to have a Root canal. Good luck.
Ouchhh I have that horrible shocking feeling in my tooth I had four fillings today
You may need to have your dentist heck the bite because if the new filling is too high that can cause a lot of pain
I had a filling maybe a month ago. It hurt so much right now.
I would go see your dentist you may need a root canal. You could also have them check the bite because if the new filling is too high that can cause a lot of pain
I’m having this exact same issue as you described… after having a hole in my tooth filled.
What ended up happening with yours? How long did it last?
I have a molar tooth that had a very deep filling that was cracked, dentist suggested replacement of the deep filling. It’s been 6months now and sensitivity is worse now to the point of searing pain for hot and cold. Tooth recovers from the pain minutes later but the tooth still aches during chewing or touching. Returning to my dentist tomorrow. Hope it won’t require root canal to resolve?
I’m afraid the only way to resolve this is with a root canal or the tooth is fractured and will need to be extracted.

Had 5 fillings 6 days ago, no pain or symptoms prior to the fillings. Doctor didn’t say anything about them being deep. Have pain since the fillings that I continue to take advil for. I don’t take the advil until I feel the pain. Waking me up at night. Does not hurt to chew or even very sensitive to hot or cold. Does it sound like I just need an adjustment. The pain seems to be coming more frequent where I have to take the advil 2-3 times per day. I am a nitetime teeth grinder. Thank you
Since your teeth are not hot and cold sensitive that’s a good sign. I would see your doctor and just have them check the bite and discuss a possibility of a night guard if you are a grinder. The bite could just be a little off something you cannot tell but will cause a lot of pain. Think of it as someone punching your arm all day, you would get a bruise. Well the ligaments around the teeth will also feel bruised.
hi, I did temporary filling on my right molar tooth yesterday, but the dentist didn’t clean the the tooth before filling he only just filled d hole which is actually a big hole, the problem now is am feeling a really throbbing pain presently and I don’t know what to do because I wasn’t feeling any pain prior to me going to fill the tooth, please I need your help and what’s the remedy.
Your Dentist should have taken a picture of the tooth and removed all the decay before placing a filling. I bet the decay maybe into the nerve and now that the hole is filled the there is no place for the infection to leak out. I would guess that there was opening that was releasing the pressure and now it’s filled the pressure is building causing the pain. I would call your doctor and be seen ASAP or get a second opinion. You probably need a root canal and crown to repair your tooth.
Hi I had a filling redone about 2 weeks ago when it broke it was not paining prior to the filling but now I have this aching pain I can eat hot and cold stuff which does not effect my tooth but the pain is just there I went back to my dentist and he was very rude and said there is nothing wrong the teeth is sensitivity but the pain feels like a tooth ache not sure what is happening .
Hopefully the rude doctor checked the bite while you were not numb. A high bite can cause the tooth to ache. You may be one of those people that need a base placed down before every filling, if this is the case just remind your dentist you would like a base placed before your next filling. I would go get a second opinion if you are not comfortable going back to the original dentist.
went back to my rude doctor and now he gave me antibiotics (flagyl and moxypen )I insisted he do an x-ray initially when he did the filling he did not x-ray the tooth he just filled, no he says it could be my tooth is cracked. I am now looking for a new dentist as I feel like I am bothering him. I had enough .
I’m glad you are going to another dentist. Just an FYI a dentist should never do any work on a tooth if they have not taken an x-ray. Always speak up for yourself you are your best advocate in your own health.
I had my tooth filled about 2 months ago and on my right side i still cant eat cold stuff on that side or drink anything cold either. And when i drink or eat something cold it makes my tooth hurt for about 10 minutes. I went back to my dentist two weeks after i got it filled and they said it was just sensitive bit it still is “just sensitive” what should i do?
I would go back to you dentist and see if he could remove the filling and place a base before placing the filling. That should make a world of difference. I’m also assuming they took an x-ray and have rechecked the bite to make sure the tooth doesn’t need a root canal or you are not hitting the tooth too hard.

I’ve gotten it filled about 4 weeks ago and when I eat chips I feel like a small pain but only for a second,Is this normal?
Hopefully the doctor checked the bite while you were not numb. A high bite can cause the tooth to ache. Call you provider you may need a bite adjustment.
Hope this helps.

Why would any dentist say that a root canal will restore a tooth? If you are still having sensitivity with a filling? When you do a root canal it pulls out all or some of the roots that give nourishment to keep the tooth stong. My root canal caused the rest of the tooth to fall out that was holding the crown. Now I need to spend more money on an implant or a bridge. Seems like a money maker to me.
I would ask this question to your dentist- was this a sound tooth before we did the root canal? What was the pocket depth (perio condition) and was there enough bone to make this a good out come? Should we have just extracted the tooth in the first place and went right to an implant? If this was not a sound tooth to begin with I would be looking for another dentist. Before you do the implant I would get a second opinion on the overall health of your teeth first.

I had a filling done about 4 weeks ago and up until now it was very sensitive and I had a sharp pain if I chewed on that side. I went back in and got the filling shaved down a bit because it was too high. My tooth doesn’t seem to be hurting anymore but my jaw is very achy. It feels a little better if I put some heat on it. I noticed that I was clenching and grinding my teeth a lot and am not sure if that is why my jaw is feeling like this or if it’s another problem.
Your jaw is probably hurting because the ligament around the teeth are bruised. With a high bite it’s like getting punched in the arm 24 hours a day and to top that off you were also clenching & grinding which also add to the sore ligament. This should all get better little by little but do not apply heat to the area only cold because heat slow down the circulation. If you continue to grind your teeth you might want to consider a night guard . A lot of people grind their teeth do to daily stress called life. A night guard will help relax the jaw muscles so you are not grind and clench on your teeth plus you will grind down the night guard not your teeth.
Hi this is the second top molor my dentist retreated root canal. 3 days ago he took out the temp filling and restored a permanent filling. I am feeling alot of pressure . it doesnt hurt when sleepijg , its when I am active all day . I am afraid to tell him , should I go to an endodontic ?
I would let you doctor know you are feeling a lot of pressure building, and let him know you want to be referred to Endodontic. There is probably a forth canal that got missed because not all molars have 4 canals and the forth is sometimes hard to find. Endodontics are the specialist and most do their work with a microscope, very few general dentist use a microscope they usually us special loop glasses the have been magnified. Do not be afraid to let him know you want to see a specialist you need to take care of yourself.
Hi, I just had a temporary filling on 7th September 2016 on my upper right premolar (decay started between my premolars). On 24th September, I returned for a permanent filling. Before he filled a permanent filling for my tooth he asked me whether I had any pain. I said no. So he a permanent filling for me. He told me my filling is deep.
After 3 weeks, 17th of October, I felt pain when I chew on hard food. Why? Should I avoid using that tooth? And also yesterday the tooth starts to feel sensitive when I rinse my tooth with cold tap water. What is happening?
Do I need to x-ray my teeth?
Well with the decay being so deep you may need a root canal. Did the doctor put a protective base down before placing the filling? I would go back and see your dentist to see what he is thinking as your next step. They might want to place a base and redo the filling to see if the tooth will calm down, if they did not place a base the first time.
Hope this helps,

Hi, I have done a nerve filling
Already I met the doctor 3 times. last time I met the doctor 5days ago. at last time, doctor said that “I need to come only one time after this for permanent filling and wait for 2 weeks and eat from that side and come for final.
But I can’t eat from that side because when eating it’s hurting. Otherwise, when I’m not eating, It’s is not hurt.
Why is that? Is that any problem of the filling or need time to recover?
So you are in the process of having a Root Canal? If this is the case the tooth can be sensitive from having an infection. The ligaments around the tooth are tender from being so inflamed causing the pain when chewing. Finishing the Root Canal should help along with getting a permanent crown. Once you had a Root Canal your will need to do a crown because the tooth is brittle now and is more likely to break.

I had a small cavity on my back lower molar next to the gum line. After having it filled it hurts to chew on it, I had no pain prior. It is only mildly cold sensitive and hurts to touch the filling, but the biggest issue is anytime I chew on anything that is not soft, I get sharp shearing pain. There is no bite adjustment because it was a side filling. What do you think is going on?
The filling may have been small but deep and may need to place a protective base. Which means they would need to remove the filling place a base and then the new filling. They could try putting a sedative filling in and leave it for a few weeks to see if the tooth settles down, if it does then do the filling or a root canal if the tooth did not settle down.
I had permanent fillings done in October, I had a tiny hole in my molar, and it hurt to eat it with it. So my dentist had me taking antibiotics and painkillers for a week, when I went for the permanent fillings, I didn’t need any injection and I didn’t feel pain when he checked the tooth. But now I’m feeling pain, I can’t chew hard with it and there seems to be a flap of loose gum directly under it, I removed it myself, for it was disturbing me, but it grew back, before it used to be a numb filled with something now it’s just loose gum
I would get a second opinion to see if that tooth has a Periodontal problem or root fracture. Make sure they have done X-rays and probed around the teeth to see what the health of the supporting bone is. It sometimes it’s very hard to see a fracture but X-ray can also show what going on with the bone, besides showing where decay is.
I Had A Hole In My Two Front Teeth, I Got A Filling, But Now It’s Throbbing & Hurts When I Drink Cold Stuff.. What Do I Do?
My best guess is if they do not settle down the decay was into the nerve or close enough to cause problems and the one or both of the teeth may need a root canal. I would go back to your dentist for a follow up.

i’m feeling a bit sensitive after getting a deep filling this morning, i was wondering if it is okay to brush my teeth?
Yes it’s just fine to brush the sensitivity maybe from the injection site.

My teeth was filled the first time and refilled again, Iam taking ibrufen, metro and amoxyl but the pain is increasing
why and I feel uncomfortable
I would check with your dentist, it could be the filling needs adjustment or the filling could be close to the nerve.
Before two weeks I went to my dentist and done filling on the bottom right side. This was composite filling of two teeth. Before filling dentist clean my teeth. when I back to home and till now, I had lot of pain on my entire right side of my mouth, and I had a lot of sensitivity to cold. Has something gone wrong?
What do I do?
It’s not uncommon to have cold sens after cleaning and/or fillings for a short period of time. Fillings may need adjustment if they are that painful. You may need to see dentist to evaluate.

Hi I’m having sensitive to pressure and heat and cold after I had my cavities filled back on Dec 13th. Things haven’t gotten better as of yet. I called my dentist office on Dec 15th an was informed it can take a couple of weeks to heal and it’s normal to fill this way. Should I call back and have them take a look?
I would at least have the bite checked to make sure you are not hitting those teeth first. Sometimes it takes a while for teeth to settle down after a filling is placed if they were deep. If the hot and cold pain doesn’t last long after they were exposed , then the teeth will probably settle down. If the pain lingers along time after words then you may be looking at having a root canal. I would check with your dentist again to see what they would like to do.

I’ve had two procedures the last two months involving drilling and filling my teeth. But I’ve notice that after I would find holes in my gums. And there kinda painful. I don’t know if it’s from the needle they use to numb my mouth or what?.
Yes needle stick would be the only thing that could cause a hole in the tissue. The injection sites can be very tender for a few days. Try rinsing with warm salt water a few times the next time you have dental work done.

Had a deep filling done on a molar (a quarter of the tooth had decayed away and needed filling) – tooth was really nicely carved and shaped afterward so no pressure when I bite (good job dentist), however there was some dull ache in the jaw (like wisdom tooth pain) for a month afterwards, and now the ache has gone but it feels like something is stuck between my teeth constantly (between the one that is filled and the one beside it). I’ve flossed and brushed and picked at it to try to alleviate it – there’s nothing actually there but the feeling remains. Is it possible that the dentistry caused my wisdom teeth to move again (my mouth is overcrowded by the way) and now the tooth beside the filled one is pressing on the filling and shifting it?
This is the front molar on the lower jaw if that makes any diffrence (not the one immediately adjacent to my wisdom tooth).
I do not think the filling is causing the problem it’s the wisdom tooth moving and putting pressure on the other teeth. You may consider checking with your dentist and see if the tooth should come out.
This wisdom tooth sound like it’s not fully erupted and is trying to come in with not enough room for it. The teeth are not in cement so they will move to try to accommodate what’s trying to fully erupt.

I had a filling done which gave me a lot of pain due to what my dentist said is a “very firm bite” (as though that’s my fault). It’s now approximately two weeks since the last time the dentist worked on it, and I still can hardly chew on that side of my mouth. It was a filling for a surface cavity–not deep at all; the dentist showed me the x-ray–but for some reason the dentist decided to make the filling quite deep. Now the dentist tells me that the pain will likely never go away and I will probably need a root canal. She will “work with me” on payment. I don’t want to lose my tooth–a tooth that had only a small cavity and wasn’t causing me any pain–and even more than that I don’t want to pay for a root canal and a crown that are the result of the dentist’s error in judgment. My question is: if I just leave the tooth alone and wait another few weeks, will the root eventually retract enough to stop causing me pain?
You can wait awhile to see if the tooth settles down. The nerve does reseed some and put up it owns layer of protection. I take it you have had the bite adjusted since the filling was first placed because the bite can be different once you are not numb. The X-ray can show the decay as being quite small but once they in there the decay can be very deep. You can always get a second opinion to see what another dentist my say.

Today, around 9:40am, I got a filling on my upper right tooth, the anesthetic just finished and my tooth hurts.
It’s not uncommon to have cold sens after fillings for a short period of time. Fillings may need adjustment if they are that painful. You may need to your dentist to evaluate.
I got a filling 16 days ago. After my filling, I noticed my tooth was pretty sensitive, and it still is now. It hurts to chew food on my right side of the mouth and is very sensitive to cold stuff. Sometimes it also has a dull ache through out the day. What should I do?
First I would go back to your dentist and have them check the bite. If the bite is fine and it was not a deep filling ask the dentist if a base was placed before the filling was put in. You may need to have them remove the filling and place a base then a new filling. If the filling was deep you may need a root canal.

I had a tooth filled 1 year ago. During the year I experienced difficulty with the bite. The dentist made an adjustment. I continued to have difficulty. I called again. During the time of the call and a visit my tooth broke. Is this something that the dentist is responsible for?
That would be a conversation you need to have with your dentist.
I’m speaking in regards to my mother she had a root canal done a year ago and got a fill in and ever since she has trouble speaking and eating with major pain as she discribed by her left bottom jaw and the pain runs to the back of her jaw we have both gone to specialist and different doctors have gotten X-rays and so much more but no one seems to find anything wrong please any help would do thank you
I would bet the tooth is fractured. Fractures do not always show on a x-ray but with her symptoms this would be what comes to mind. She will need an extraction because you cannot repair fractured roots. Depending on what tooth it is, she could do a bridge if the teeth are good on either side or implant is always an option too.

I had a root canal done about a month ago and my tooth still hurts went back to the dentist and there seems to be nothing wrong she did the x-rays and even laser but nothing seems to help . My jaws also pain but funny enough I can eat and the there is no sensitivity on my tooth my pain comes and goes before I have it extracted I would love to hear your opinion could it also be a fracture as well.
Have they tried a round of antibiotic to make sure all the infection has cleared up? I would give antibiotic a try before an extraction and if that doesn’t work then yes the tooth maybe fractured. Fractured roots usually doesn’t show on an x-ray and all the dentist has to go by is symptoms the patient has. Good luck.
I had two fillings one of them was really deep hole. dentist didn’t know how much she had to put so she said it might be sensitive and I had to go to the dentist if it hurt will the tooth stop aching?????
If the cavity was deep the tooth may need a root canal. If the tooth is not hot and cold sensitive all you may need is a bite adjustment. If it’s been longer than 6 weeks and you are still hurting I would go see your dentist to see what they think.

Hello,
I had a filling from when I was a teen replaced with new material and the dentist said that I should have some pain and sensitivity due to the size of the filling and how close it was to the root, but now I’m starting to get migranes and I don’t think I should be taking Ibuprophen indefinetly
After the completion of a filling, teeth may be hot, cold, or pressure sensitive, which is completely normal.
Hello,
I had a filling done two weeks ago on my top molars on the right side. A week after I got the filling I was having extreme pain when I attempted to chew anything on the right side of my mouth. I went back to the dentist to see if my bite needed to be adjusted and she said everything was fine. She told me that “tooth” colored fillings are more sensitive than silver fillings and that it may hurt for several months. She said that if I “simply cannot stand the pain anymore” than she will replace the tooth colored fillings in 30 days for silver ones. Should I get a second opinion or is this normal?
She can replace the tooth color filling with the same color all she has to do put down a base to protect the nerve. I always have a base placed before any filling insurance may pay for it but it’s worth the cost not to be in pain. If she will not to this then I would get another opinion. The filling should be at no cost to you if she is a good dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling or something last week. My dentist said the ridges on my teeth were too big or something and he drilled them and put some blue gel and some other things and filled them. A week later im feeling pain on the tooth when i bite and theres a cold and hot sensation aswell as an ache…
I would go back to your doctor and have them check to see if the bite is high. The tooth may only need a bite adjustment. The dentist would have removed the decay and placed a white filling which is called a composite filling. If the sensitivity doesn’t get better the doctor may need to remove the filling and place a base and new filling if the decay was not deep. If the decay was deep you may need a root canal.

I had a 2 fillings yesterday and now my tooth is hurting so much and the gums where my tooth is located is now boil and it really hurts, I can’t even sleep and eat properly but the pain disappear when I drink something cold , what would I do?
The tissue was traumatized by using a band that goes around the tooth to form the filling. I would rinse with warm salt water for a few days and things should get better. If not contact your dentist.
The WFDC Team
I had a very small cavity filled in the last week of January. It only hurts when I brush over the spot it was filled. I can still eat hot or cold, drink anything hot or cold but it does hurt when I brush over that one spot? Is there anyway to get rid of this strange pain? Will I need further treatment?
I would brushing with Sensodyne tooth paste for a week this should help with the sensitivity. You should not need any other treatment on this tooth.
The WFDC Team
My back molar on the right side of my mouth was a tooth that had a filling done many years ago and then the tooth cracked one day from the top right going right down to the left on the gum line and nothing further was done about it because 1. it didn’t hurt at the time and 2. I had no money to do anything about it. For about 20 years this tooth was no problem.
Forward 20 years and last week I had a pain in this tooth. Drinking cold water or eating anything cold caused me intense pain. I booked in to see the dentist and he did a filling. A few days later I returned to the surgery and told him that my tooth could not handle the pain. He polished up the filling of my tooth with something (?) and I was told that some sort of solution that was placed in my tooth before having the filling done was probably causing the extreme sensitivity that I’m experiencing. He said the tubules of my tooth leading to nerve are quite sensitive. Biting on the tooth is no problem but should anything cold go near it then it’s enough to send me through the roof. I’m close to wanting this tooth taken out because I’m sick of tooth pain. I’ve already lost 3 teeth and to tell you the truth it was blessed relief having them taken out. I fear the root canal procedure as I had one done before and even after the dentist had done the packing I was still in pain. The pain was so excruciating that only upon removal of the tooth did I actually see that the tooth had rotted from beneath. It was the worst pain imaginable.
What are your suggestions for what I should do now? If the tooth was slightly cracked what should the procedure be to restore it? Should I have the tooth x-rayed to see what is going on? Or should I just wait it out for a few more weeks? Or should I just have the blasted thing taken out?
Well with a filling out and tooth cracked for 20 years I’m sure the decay was into the nerve I’m hoping they took an x-ray before doing anything. But I’m not looking at the x-ray I cannot say for sure the decay was into the nerve, with that said you will probably need a root canal, build up and a crown to restore the tooth, if there is enough tooth structure left. Other option would be an extract. The dentin tubules do lead to the nerve and could be sensitive if this was a small filling and it will just need time to calm down. Tooth paste that’s made for sensitive teeth can help with dentin tubules sensitive. With your symptoms I would go see your dentist or get a second opinion.
The WFDC Team
I had a two teeth filled right beside each other last week and anytime liquid touches my teeth I get a massive tooth ache. Anytime I chew gum or food it also hurts.
I would go back to your dentist and have them check the bite and also ask if these were deep fillings? IF they were deep did the dentist place a base down before the fillings were placed? You may just need a bite adjustment, when you are numb the bite can be off, or they could need a root canal if the decay was deep.
The WFDC Team
I’ve had a cavity filled two days ago and any time I have to eat I have to use my left side which has to be filled also. When I drink anything cold and it touches my tooth it’s very painful and sensitive. How do I stop it?
Sometimes it takes a few days, weeks for things to settle down. I would check with your dentist to see if they placed a base under the filling if not you may consider having the filling redone with a base. I would have a base placed for all future filling. It will cost a little more but you should not have the pain. I do this with all my fillings because of the sensitivity. Well worth it! So in short it’s going to take time for the sensitivity to go away or have the filling redone.
The WFDC Team
Hello, I had a filling redone yesterday and when the numbness wore off the same pain from before came back. What worries me is that the dentist had an X ray done on the tooth and she said that the root is infected and that I needed a root canal. Then after she proceeded with only making a filling instead of a root canal and told me that I may come back in a month or a year for a root canal. I can’t shake the feeling that she wants me to come back for more while I’m suffering for 4days now because of that tooth. The pain is so great it moves along my entire left jaw (up and down) and there is a slight pain from time to time behind my left ear. Is this normal? Is it also normal that I feel the pain somewhere else either by the tooth in question? Should I have a second opinion?
First of all I would get a second opinion and maybe a new dentist. If she told you the nerve was infected and only placed a filling big mistake! The pain can travel because the nerves intersect and with pain as severe as you are having I bet everything hurts. If you really need a root canal you never want the patient to wait the infection can get worse. You may need antibiotics before they start the root canal. You should always have an x-ray take before any treatment , the doctor need this x-ray to diagnosis the treatment.
The WFDC Team
I got my tooth filled just this morning and it feels like nothing was fixed. The numbing wore off pretty quick and it isn’t an ache. It just feels like the cavity is still there. I can’t really afford to go back to the dentist. What do I do?
Is there another dentist in the office? If so explain what your concerns are they should do a second opinion and treatment if need for nothing. If there is no other doctor you should still be able to see that dentist with you concerns for NC as a follow up. Maybe the filling did fall out it could happen and the doctor need to prepare the tooth more and place a new filling.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
The WFDC Team
I just had my tooth filling. The dentist told me it was a temporary one as they cannot put a permanent one because they said my gum grow a little bit over the teeth. They asked me to wait for a couple of week before attending a dentist again to check either to extract the teeth or put another filling. The problem is i’m still experiencing toothache (really painful one) which makes me sleepless. I need your advice please.
First question is was the tooth badly decayed and second question is was the gum tissue growing into the decayed space? If this is the case the tooth probably needs a root canal not just a filling that saying there is enough tooth structure left to save the tooth. If there is not enough tooth structure left the tooth will need to be extracted. The temporary fill can be causing a buildup of pressure if the decay was into the nerve, because now there is not a way for the pressure to escape. I would call your doctor and explain your symptoms and ask what the x-ray showed was the decay into the nerve?
You can always get a second opinion.
The WFDC Team
My tooth is always hurting after it got filled
If you teeth always hurt after a filling then ask you dentist to place a base before each filling. It does cost but well worth the money if you are sensitive. The gum tissue maybe sore a few day from the band to form the filling and the injection site but to ease that pain faster rinse with warm salt water.
The WFDC Team
I had a filling replaced because it was old and leaking, I had some sensitivity on that tooth two weeks before I had it replaced, since the replace I’ve had pain when I bite on that side, it was very strong in the beginning and has gotten better but it’s been more then a month and it still hurts a sharp pain when I bite. I went back to my dentist and she adjusted the bite cause I told her it felt a bit high but didn’t help, she also told me the filling was a deep one and she did place a base on it. when I went back she gently hit my tooth with an instrument and said I probably don’t have nerve damage. What would you recommend I do? Should I see a different dentist? Could I still have a cavity underneath that she didn’t see it or is it possible my tooth is just taking longer to heal.
I do not know how long it’s been since the bite adjustment, it will take a few week for the bruising to go away. Think of it as someone punching you in the arm for let’s say two weeks 24/7 and at night you were probably clenching to do your own self adjustment, it will be sensitive. You can always get a second opinion just make sure you get the first x-ray sent to the next doctor. The decay could have been close to the nerve and if it doesn’t settle down you may end up with a root canal. The base was placed to help with the sensitivity and the pulp will reseed some on its own because it does not like being sensitive. So you will have to decide how long you want to put up with the sensitivity, if it’s not cold and hot sensitive the tooth should calm down.

I had a filling on my upper tooth the last molar on the right side. It’s been 3 weeks now. I got 2 fillings done on the left side of my mouth and that side is totally fine. I can’t chew on the right side because it causes pain I was waiting it out to see how it can recover but I don’t understand why my right side hurts and not the left side. my dr says it will take time to heal but how much longer?
I’m no dentist and I wouldn’t want to leave any client with pain and discomfort. Should a root canal be performed ?
The filling was probably deep and close to the nerve. I’m sure the doctor does not want you in pain either but also does not want to rush into a root canal. I would ask your dentist if they placed a base? If they did not I would try having the filling redone with a base and if the tooth is still sensitive after that , you probably will need a root canal. You can always go get a second opinion but make sure you bring your first x-ray with you so they can compare to what the tooth looks like now.
The WFDC Team
I had a filling and a root canal done yesterday. The root canal tooth is absolutely fine, but my filling tooth still hurts and it hasnt stopped hurting since the injection has worn off. What should I do?
That’s understandable that the root canal tooth doesn’t hurt the nerve has been removed. I would take some anti-inflammatory medication and give it some time. Now that you are not numb are you hitting that tooth first? If you are then you will need your bite adjusted or it will never clam down. You can ask you dentist if they placed a base before the filling, and was the decay deep? If there was no base placed consider having the filling redone with a base. You may in the future always remind you dentist that you want a base down before the filling, to hopefully avoid having the sensitivity.
The WFDC Team
I appreciate that you recommend to use anti-inflammatory medication to help with tooth sensitivity. I often feel a slight pain whenever I eat something really sweet. I usually try to swish my mouth out with warm water to help with the pain. I’ll have to try this next time it happens.
Anti-inflammatory can help a lot when teeth are sensitive. For the sweet sensitivity you may want to try Sensodyne or Colgate toothpaste that could help. What it does is plug the dentin tubules that have been exposed from wear or too aggressive brushing.

Hello
So I went to my dentist and took X-rays and also asked about the base which he did put one. He also adjusted my bite to see if that helps.
I still have senseative to cold and hot. Also to biting it has a sharp shooting pain when I eat and hard foods. My dentist said that it’s gonna take time and If not a root canal is gonna be performed. In your experience how long does it take for the pain and cold and hot food sensitivity to go away ?
Thank you
Sometimes it takes a few days, weeks for things to settle down. As time goes on the pain should become less and less, if it doesn’t then follow up with your dentist.

I had a filling done on the lower teeth at last molar tooth.
I felt triggering pain every time I bite my food. Why does this happen. Its been 4 weeks since I have gone for this filling.
You should not be in pain 4 weeks later. There may be something else going on with the tooth or it maybe a simple bit adjustment is needed.

Hi…i just had my fillings yesterday… the docter said that the decay is quite deep but after the filling all is well except for my cheek..its abit swollen…should be worried or it is normal..and that it will eventually heal?
You can try a mild salt water rinse a few times a day for the next 2-3 days to see if that relieves the swelling. If that does not help please consult your dentist.

Hi, yesterday i had some fillings done, two on the right side of my jaw on the top and bottom, they where very deep. Now currentley and after i left the dentist the bottom filling was starting to hurt and its gradually gotten worse, is this normal and if so what can i do to help ease the pain, thanks jarred
I would try Ibuprofen first. Sometimes it takes a while for the tenderness to go way. If the bite is high call your dentist for an adjustment. Then see how things go. If things get worse like hot and cold sensitivity that does not go away, you may need a root canal. Keep in contact with you dentist.

Good evening,
I did a tooth filling on my molar 3 a week ago and it’s been sensitive for the past few days while I chew or drink water. According to the dentist, my tooth had caries and it was till the dentin. I have no problem with my tooth when I am not chewing and drinking so will it go away?
I would have your dentist check the bite, it maybe high causing the sensitivity. It’s good news that your tooth doesn’t hurt all the time, you probably do not have nerve damage. For the cold water sensitivity try a tooth paste from Sensodyne or Colgate both make a good paste for sensitive teeth.

I have problem I my teeth. Before one year I Done filling now its very painful gave a smooth easy Treatment.
Thanks
If the filling was done over a year ago I suggest going to see your dentist. They can take an x-ray and diagnosis what’s going on.

I always have problems when I go to the dentist. Wanting a bridge turned into 3 years of hell. Dentist shaved a tooth down too far exposing the nerve (4 days of actual hell) & had to get a root canal done. Had to be redone 3x over 12 mo. Jaw infection set in after the first root canal. Broken posts, to specialists, multiple times sitting 3-4 hours in the chair. Went to another dentist 3 years later, said the teeth were no good for a bridge, too small and on top of the infection needed to be pulled. Lost 3 teeth & my bite on the left is gone.
Pain is gone so just went in for a check up and had a few small cavaties filled and a molar was stubborn & didn’t want to get numb. He ended up going straight into the tooth to numb it. It hurt and I think it was a bad idea cuz later after the numbing wore off even air shot me through the roof! Any air, bite down, cold, hot would send me through the roof. Dentist said it might be the bite lol here we go again! It feels like an exposed nerve all over again. He got near my tooth with the drill and before he came near it, just the air from the drill sent me off the table! He renumbed it and drilled it down 🙁 I was so numb it took like 6 hours for it to wear off. The next day was ok, didn’t have the constant pain but was afraid to eat. The second day I can’t bit down. Any pressure hurts and the tooth itself hurts. Maybe the nerve is just freaking out cuz the cavity wasn’t deep at all. What is wrong with me lol I never have normal dental experiences
Some people are hard to numb or it take longer than normal for the anesthetic to take effect. I would get a second opinion with a endodontist if the tooth doesn’t settle down. If the decay was not deep then you may want to try ibuprofen to see the tooth will settle down on its own.

Hello
My 3 year old son fell off his bike and when I went to get him his mouth was bleeding. I looked and noticed his front tooth and the one next to it shifted back a little bit. I took him to get checked with the dentist however he was in between clients and touched my sons tooth and told me it to worry. He said he will be fine. However as a parent I’m thankful he’s ok. I’m still concerned about his two teeth that shifted back and I’m un happy with his smile he has now and how his teeth are shifted back. Any steps suggested for this situation. Thank you
Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do because they are baby teeth. The teeth may turn dark because of the trauma to them. As long as they do not hurt him you are just going to have to wait until the permanent teeth come in.

Hi, I actually went to the dentist to get two fillings done about 2 or 3 weeks ago but now I have a pain on top of one of my teeth and gum. My dentist actually gave me medication for something, I think the pain. But I think it hurts because I bite down a lot.
I think your bite may need to be adjusted call your dentist and have them check out the bite.

I had work done on my teeth about 8 months ago and I’m not gunna lie I did have about 6 cavaties and I’m 17. Three of my teeth hurt but eventually one of them got bester about 3 weeks later but the bother two were till hurting. So I went back and they said it will just take time. About 2 weeks later one of the teeth that were hurting fell out. So I had to wait for my mom to find a new dentist and my the insurance company had to go and try tonget the money back. So months later I got a new dentist and she had to redo all the fillings because none of them were bonded correctly. But a month after that the two teeth still hurt and are very sensitive to hot and cold. So I don’t know if I should go back or not
I would go back and see your new dentist and have them check the bite. When you are numb you do not always bite down correctly and maybe the bite is high. In the meantime try ibuprofen it may help the sensitivity.
The WFDC Team
I’ve got a filling in my front tooth recently and it hurts in the middle of my tooth. It feels like it’s physically decaying.
I would check with your dentist it see if the bite is high. I would try some ibuprofen until you can get in. It doesn’t sound like you are in need of a root canal yet but would keep a close eye on how things feel.
WFDC Team
My filling was fractured and doctor filled that gap with temporary filling. It happened yesterday. But sudden pain appears in my nerve and reaches to my head. It is really very terrible. Today i discussed with dentist and he suggested medicine for three days. Should i wait or go forwaed for root canal. However during filling dentist recommended me crown.
Your dentist may want you on antibiotics for a few days before doing the root canal. You probably have the pain because the temporary fill was place closing off the way for the pressure to release. You always want to follow up with a crown after a root canal. The tooth now has no nutrient and the tooth becomes brittle.
Thank you WFDC Team
So on April 26th 2017 I got a filling, but where I got the filling my tooth was decayed to the roots my dentist says they should heal but I’m just curious how long it would take I have a slight pain in that tooth nothing major but can sometimes keep me up through the night
I would check with your dentist but if the decay was that deep enough to get to the nerve you probably need a root canal. If the decay was actually on the outside of the root is the tooth good enough to save? You can always get a second opinion from an Endodontist.
Thanks WFDC team
I had a filling done on my upper molar like 2 days ago. The tooth hurts even while my mouth is closed. Please can I know the reason.
I would check with your dentist I’m thinking the bite is too high. It maybe just at simple bite adjustment and ibuprofen for thing TO calm down.
Thanks WFDC Team
I got 3 fillings last monday and one of them has been aching ever since. Sensative to tempatures. Any suggestions
Try some Ibuprofen see if that helps . Have your dentist check the bite or see if they placed a base under filling. If the filling was not deep then you might want the filling redone with a base to protect the nerve.
Thanks WFDC team
there a hole in my premolar when i drink water it’s okay otherwise its very painful. i think it reaches down damaging my pulp and canal.
I would go see your dentist with that much decay you may need a root canal or extraction if there is not enough tooth structure left to save the tooth.
Thanks WFDC Team
i just filled a broken tooth friday that was close to the nerves and saturday night it started paining me really bad and when i drink cold water or suck ice it ease for a while and around the tooth is kinda blueish what can i do or have to do
For the tissue rinse with warm salt water. If the tooth doesn’t settle down you will probably will need a root canal with the decay being so deep.
Thanks WFDC team
I had a chipped tooth and my dentist decided to fill the tooth after two try by a less experienced dentist. My tooth wasn’t hurting at all before this procedure. Since I did the filling my tooth is been extremely sensitive n been hurting and sensitive to cold can’t even Jew on that side. What do I do????
I would have the dentist check the bite first. Take ibuprofen to help with the pain and if things do not settle down you may be looking at a root canal. If the tooth has a vertical fracture they may not be able to save the tooth. You can always get a second opinion to see what another dentist has to say.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling today and now the surrounding teeth are pulstating, i dont know if it is my wisdom tooth that is causing the pain. I’m very concerned cause this therapist did a filling last time and it hit my nerve which caused the worst pain and that tooth had been extracted, now these teeth thats had a filling today is on that same side! I hate going to the dentist after that traumatic experience!
I would take some ibuprofen for a few day. It’s very common for the other teeth to be tender because the put a band around the tooth and a wedge between the teeth to help for the new filling. If thing do not calm down you should have your wisdom teeth checked, but if you did not have the pain before it likely not the cause.

Hello, about 6 weeks ago I had a cavity filling for a tooth that already had filling. So, the dentist removed all the alloy from my tooth and filled it again by composite. the first week after that, my tooth was very sensitive to cold food and pressure. When I chewed crunchy food the pain was sharp and sometimes I jumped up. then sensitivity to temperature disappeared and I visited my dentist and he did bite adjustment so pain by pressure got much better but never got well. now I can eat things by my tooth and pain is not serious but it still hurts anyway and doesn’t get better. Is it possible the tooth is still too high? or probably the nerve has been involved or since the pain got better after bite adjustment that means I must wait more? I don’t know. please advise.
Thanks a lot
If the pain is from hot or cold that lingers you are probably looking at a root canal. If the sensitivity go away after the hot and cold is not present you can try Colgate toothpaste for sensitive teeth. It doesn’t hurt to have your dentist check the bite again to assure the filling is not high. They can take an x-ray to see if anything is showing that would indicate a need for a root canal. They can also do a pulp test to see how the nerve responds.

Hi. I got 4 fillings done 4 days ago ever since i got them done that side of my mouth has been hurting so bad ive been takung 4 ibuprofen at a time as much as I’m able to stop the pain and nothing works , going back in 6 days to get 2 more fillings and i just had a tooth pulled a few days before getting the fillings also. What can be the reason for the pain?
I would have the dentist check the bite to make sure it’s not high. The bite maybe off due to being numb and a simple bite adjustment could calm everything down. Ask the dentist if the filling were deep? If they were did they place a base or should they redo the filling and place the base. I would not do anymore fillings until these teeth calm down.
Thank WFDC Team
Hello, I am more or less sure I have cracked tooth. This tooth has a deep cavity filling with has been done recently and after cavity filling, it hurts when I bite down on crunchy food. It is not sensitive to heat and cold. I have done a funny test. I pushed the end of a spoon on my tooth and when I released the pressure, I felt pain which is symptom of cracked tooth I assume. I have a dentist appointment next month and I must wait until that time. I am curious to know about the treatment procedure. Can I be hopeful the tooth be treated by a crown or new filling or I must prepare myself for root canal? Thanks
Sound like you may need a root canal and crown. If the tooth is truly cracked then the only fix for that tooth would be an extraction. Until you get into your dentist I would avoid chewing on that side if possible.
Thanks WFDC Team
I recently went to the dentist , I got 3 fillings done on my right side. It’s been hard to sleep cause they hurt so bad. Once I take medicine I feel better but soon as the medicine wears off I’m back to pain . My doctor said I may need a root canal but he did the fillings first it’s been 5 days and I still feel pain
If the decay was close to the nerve you may need a root canal but I’m guessing it’s only one tooth causing the problem not all 3 teeth. If ibuprofen is helping with the pain you may only need time for the teeth to settle down. Your dentist should be able to tell what tooth is causing the problem with a pulp tester and a cold test.
Thanks WFDC Team
I recently switched to a new dentist and had a couple of cavities filled on the left side. Now whenever I bite down a certain way on anything crunchy (cereal is a good example) I get this sharp pain in the space where those two teeth meet. I’ve looked and compared to the other side of my mouth the filling seems quite low. Is it possible that I just had them shave the filling down too much while I was numb?
I would have the dentist check the bite to make sure it’s not high. The bite maybe off due to being numb and a simple bite adjustment could calm everything down.

I just got my feeling done yesterday and it hurt when cold or and type of food is on it what should I do and how long is it gonna last
Sorry for the long delay to answer.
I would take some ibuprofen and wait a few days it usually take time for a tooth to settle down after a filling is placed. If your tooth doesn’t settle down or if the bite feels high I would go back to your dentist.

Whilst I was pregnant I had terrible nerve/tooth problem. I was told once baby here will have root canal or tooth out.
So I had my baby 5 weeks ago and my temp filling dissolved last week. Pain was there but not terrible.
So saw dentist yest and for now they’ve put filling back until I rebook to have taken out.
But I’ve woken today with it so sore. Hurts to chew on that side and just feels like an ache constantly.
Is this normal? I’d understand if the drilling and filing was done but all was done was filling put back for now.
Thank you for any advice.
I’m thinking your tooth is now hurting so bad is because the temporary filling was out and allowing the infection to drain. With the new temporary filling placed the pressure is building causing all the pain. You will need to a root canal and crown to save the tooth providing there is enough tooth structure left to save the tooth. Second option would be to have the tooth extracted. I would call your dentist and see how soon you can get in and see if they do root canals or do you need to go see an Endodontist. I would also take some ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Sorry for the long delay to answer.

Hello, sorry this post is so long but ive read the other questions and see a lot of the same responses/instructions and many of them i’ve done already.
I had a 15 yr old amalgam filling restored two weeks ago with more amalgam filling and it’s still really painful when I chew the softest of foods on it. The pain lasts all day, and this is even after having the bite adjusted a few days after the procedure was done. The tooth is on the bottom in the back, second from the last.
It was painful and very sensitive right after as to be expected, but i thought the pain was edging off a little on day 3. Just hoping i guess because on day 4 after i ate, the pain reached new heights which led me to getting the bite adjusted. Mind you I followed the directions; in fact, I have yet to eat anything hard, crunchy, or chewy two weeks later.
The dentist was confident using the amalgam filling as oppose to the tooth colored filling saying he’d just have to take out more tooth but it would fine. From this i gathered it wasnt too deep to the nerve, but hey, we ARE talking about dentists. This is the 4th one I’ve been to in the last 5 months trying to find a good one, not including specialists, and not about this one tooth but other teeth. I’m just now getting to this tooth, finally. But im noticing a disturbing pattern in my personal experience and the many experiences I’m reading here and abroad on the internet
As long as I don’t eat anything the pain is manageable, but once I eat my day is over, filled with popping pain meds, OTC and stronger/prescription pain meds, which none of it really seems to help. The only thing that helps a little is not eating. I eat once a day, at night before bed to hopefully sleep through it. But no such luck last night. Its just getting worse, the pain is spreading, now the top tooth above it aches, and the ear, jaw, headache etc.
I go back to the dentist in two days. Today I had an extensive ct scan done by a periodontist. It showed the filling doesn’t cover the side of tooth like it should, it doesn’t go all the way down the side of the tooth like it should (the dentist didn’t use a band?), so that’ll be the topic at the dentist appt rather than the other restorative work I need. But honestly the pain is all over the place at this point when I eat, and as you can imagine I’m quite exhausted with dentists experimenting on their patients right now, tired of dishing out money to be in more pain than what I came to them for.
So a root canal is not even an option even if it is an option. My experience in the last 6 mos or so with dentists and dental specialiast etc coupled with the experiences on this thread is a red blazing hot flamming flag to stop here for now with this tooth and any others, as the pain just seems to go on and on and on, or leave and come back etc, according to these comment and my own personal experience.
Sound like you need to ask the periodontist who he would recommend you seeing as a general dentist. Sound like you have given up on dentist in general which is very upsetting considering there are a lot of great dentist out there.

I had 2 separate dentist appointments. One was 2 weeks ago and they filled 5 of my top teeth and one on my bottom teeth. I went back this past Saturday and had a tooth extraction and another filling on the bottom. I have never had in problem with my front bottom teeth. I was told to do the hydrogen peroxide and warm water rinse and then also do warm salt water. Now I am having some pain/ sensitivity in my front bottom tooth. It doesn’t hurt all the time, it’s not sensitive to heat or cold, it kinda is to sweets but it just started a few days after all these appointments. I’m just curious if it’s because all the dental work I have had done in the last 2 weeks or the peroxide rinses? I have had every tooth checked in the last 2 weeks, I wouldn’t think they missed anything…how long does the sensitivity last?
It’s been a week maybe you should stop the peroxide rinse and do warm salt water rinse. The hydrogen peroxide maybe causing the sensitivity to those lower teeth. You may also want to try a sensitivity toothpaste.

I had 4 fillings at my left side: one at the top, another three at the bottom, and 2 fillings at my bottom right side. it has passed 2 weeks after my fillings and one of my right bottom teeth and my right side teeth are still hurt when I bite some not very soft things, such as beef, chicken, celery and so on. Is this a normal situation? Should I wait longer and see if the pain can pass away? Should I call back my dentist and let them check my teeth again?
I would call your dentist I think you may need your bite adjusted and things should settle down.
I think you probably will need a root canal. If your dentist doesn’t’ do root canals they can refer you to an Endodontist. I would call you dentist and let them know of the problems you are having, they should get you right away, you may need antibiotics before starting treatment.
Thanks WFDC Team
So I lost a filling out of my tooth it went years without a filling in it because I had no insurance and my husband at the time would not pay out of pocket to have it fixed . it has never bothered me I just recently went and had it fixed now my tooth bothers me (hurts) whenever I eat whether it’s hard food or soft food it’s been 48 hours since it was fixed is this normal
You can have the dentist check the bite. But I’m thinking the decay was deep and into the nerve. With that said you may need a root canal and crown to save the tooth. There is now no way for the pressure to release with the filling done. I would call your dentist and discuss you symptom with them. Let hope all you need is a bite adjustment and time for things to calm down.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling come out in the LH top back of my mouth which caused me pain. The dentist refilled and said he had to put in a liner as the filling was deep. The pain returned as soon as the anaesthetic wore off, and I have been treating with Ibuprofen and over-the-counter pain relief (ice also helps). I have a painful blister at the filled tooth site that is also causing pain, and I wonder if this is related, or an infection. The blister was clearly there whilst the dentist worked on my mouth and he didn’t remark on it, so I imagined he must have thought it was not a problem. If it was an infection related to the toothache surely he would have said something or prescribed a treatment? I have another appointment in 2 weeks for work on the other side of my mouth – should I leave it until then? As I said, surely the dentist must have seen the blister and not thought it a problem?
Great that the dentist placed a base because the filling was deep, but if you had the blister before the filling was placed I would bet the tooth needs a root canal. I would also ask the doctor what the x-ray showed? The blister is called a fistula which allows the infection to drain because the decay went into the nerve. You should be put on antibiotics to get the infection under control. I would check with your dentist to see if he even does root canals. You may also may want to get a second opinion on your treatment if your current dentist ignored that bump. I would not wait 2 weeks before being seen by someone.

I had a fill in done a few weeks ago on my bottom tooth and like usually it was a little sore. But now it hurts to bite down or to put any kind of pressure on it in the cavity wasn’t that deep when they filled it. What should I do?
I’m think you have a high bite. I would call your dentist to have him check it. You can also take ibuprofen to help with the inflammation.
Thanks WFDC Team
My filling is giving me loads of pain but my dentist isn’t sure what wrong
I would go get a second opinion with an Endodontist to see if they can get to the bottom of what causing the pain. I the mean time I would take ibuprofen to help with the discomfort.
Thanks WFDC Team
i had a filling about a week ago, it didnt hurt at all up until this point. its very sensitive to both hot and cold, it hurts just sitting there with no pressure on it and with pressure(more pain with more pressure but thats probably a no brainer lol) any idea whats going on?
I would call your dentist this maybe just a simple bite adjustment and some ibuprofen until things settle down. If a bite adjustment doesn’t help you may be looking at a root canal but start small and see what happens.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I had teeth work done 2 root canls and a filling in so much pain 3 weeks want to 4 denest omg .
My only suggestion is seeing an Endodontist. The teeth maybe fractured and need to be extracted. Did they put you on antibiotics? Sound like you may have an infection.

Hi I have done my filling two weeks before. After filling of my tooth it was fine and I able to eat everything. Suddenly from yesterday I start feeling extreme pain while eating although my same tooth is not sensitive to cold or hot. Basically I can’t use the tooth for my eating purpose. I don’t know what exactly happen. Doctor told me before filling that you have a cavity close to nerve. But he told taht after filling you will feel better. can someone please suggest what exactly happen to me.
I would call your dentist the bite is probably high due to the fact that the tooth is not hot or cold sensitive. There is always a possibility the tooth may need a root canal due to the fact that the decay was close to the nerve. I would start with the bite first.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had 3 fillings and the pain is so bad i wanna cry. It hurts to open my mouth or do anything at all
I would call your dentist and ask if the fillings were deep? Next question if they were deep did they place a base down before the fillings? If the filling were deep and no base placed I would have them redone. I do not think all 3 teeth would need root canals. In the meantime take some Ibuprofen to help take the edge off. If the 3 teeth are next to each other their maybe just one causing all the problem but with them so close they all feel very sore.
Thanks WFDC Team
I got a filling about 5 days ago it hurts a little here and there but its not caused by anything it just hurts a little about 2 times a day and hurts only a little whats wrong with it?
It’s probably just the tooth getting used to the new filling. With each new filling the nerve reseeds a little and puts down its own protective layer. I would take some ibuprofen for a few days. If things get worse I would have a conversation with your dentist.
Thanks WFDC TEam
Hi. I was at the dentist on Monday for a tooth that cracked/broke Sunday night. The dentist said there was also some additional decay, so he filled it. By wed night I was hurting so badly I thought I definitely needed a root canal…come to find out it had already been root canaled years ago, so my Endodontist had to numb me up and use gas (the pain was so bad) just to aghast the bite on the tooth. It felt a bit better last night after the anesthetic wore off, but as today progressed so did my pain. So it’s back again…I’m on a ton of meds, including a steroid my Endodontist gave me and nothing is help— except for heat…I’m drinking tea like it’s my job…that seems to keep the pain somewhat manageable but only while I’m drinking it. Hard time sleeping tonight. I also called my dentist after hours and they haven’t called me back. Is there anything you can recommend or what could be going on with this tooth. It’s already root canaled, and then filled how can it possibly be hurting this much?!? Thanks
My best guess is the tooth has a vertical fracture which you cannot see on an x-ray and the only treatment for a fractured tooth is an extraction. You may be able to replace the missing tooth with an implant or a bridge depending on what going on with the rest of your teeth.

hi, I had a silver filling replace because a cavity was forming under it 13 days ago. Dentist said it was a big cavity…so she replaced it with a composite filling. A few days after I couldn’t chew on that tooth so 3 days ago I went in to have it checked. So she checked it with a blue piece of paper after checking it she pulled out the drill in a attempt to file it down I said wait aren’t you suppose to numb me she said I don’t need to because it’s not going to hurt. Man she was wrong it hurt why was it hurting I thought bite adjustments are not suppose to hurt. She stop and put something called desensitizer and then she had me bite down and I didn’t feel the pain. Why was it hurting when she was filing down the filling. She said she didn’t see any nerve when replacing the filling so how long before it heals after the adjustment. What do the desensitizer do is it a permanent fix haven’t eating on that side afraid it might hurt.
It sound like the bite was high. With a high bite for 2 weeks all the ligament are very bruised. It’s like being punched in the arm 24 x 7 for 2 week. Everything should calm down in a few days remember the ligament were bruised. I would take some ibuprofen to help thing calm down. The desensitizer was probably a topical numbing agent which would temporally numb the ligament. I would try eating on that tooth again that’s the only way to see if things are getting better.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling done today, I think it was quite deep. It hurts a lot, even though it’s only been 12 hours , I’ve never had a filling like this. X-rays were done beforehand and there is no infection. I’m wondering if it’s because its quite deep or maybe because my gums aren’t as good as they used to be (they’re now graded 2) . Painkillers seem to settle it down a bit so could it just be because its new or possibly my gums? Do you have any advice? Thank you
I would rinse with warm salt water to help with where the injection was given. The filling has nothing to do with the condition of gums (Periodontal condition) they may have recommended deep scaling to address the gum issue, this treatment would be highly recommend. Without a healthy foundation to supports your teeth the Periodontal condition will continue to get worse. As far as the filling goes if the sensitivity continues you may need a root canal due to the fact that the decay was deep. Call you dentist if the pain gets worse. Also make sure you are not contacting that tooth first, if you are a simple bite adjustment maybe all you need.

Hello,
Well, I went to a dentist in spain during my holidays for one year ago. I got 3 small fillings, but that was not even necessary, because my original dentist said I had no carious, so the dentist in spain just made it for the money. Anyway,I had no pain before i went to the dentist, but the one filling in my molar tooth still hurts after one year. My original dentist in my hometown tried to fix my problem, but with no succes. She tried to
– make new filling two times (she said the nerve was healthy)
– x-ray(nothing to see)
– polish my teeth
– temporary filling. That helped a lot, my pain was decreasing, however, when she took it out and replaced it with a normal filling, the pain came back.
Now she says, that she has no idea what is wrong with my teeth, so therefore she suggests to remove my crown and replace it with something. But i dont like that idea.
I will try to explain my tooth pain:
Pain during chewing, only soft food can i eat without pain.
I almost got pain in my teeth all the time. It is like that my teeth is irritated, maybe it is my nerve, but i got a small filling.
When I take a tooth stick and press it on my molar teeth, it is exactly that pain i feel all the time.
What are your thoughts about it? And should i get a new crown?
The crown that your dentist is talking about is a crown that covers your tooth, she would reduce your current tooth structure all the way around and enough off the biting surface to place a crown made in the lab. When your dentist took out the temporary filling and place the permanent filling did she put a base down before placing the filling? Before doing a permanent crown I would check to see if a base was placed since the tooth calmed down while the temporary filling was in. I would start with getting a base under a new filling and see if all the pain goes away. You can always get a second opinion to see if another doctor can figure out what is going on since she admits she is stumped.
Thank you WFDC Team
Thanks for your fast reply,
Yes, the base was placed when she made my permanent filling. I was thinking about why a small filling can cause such huge iusses like this and if a new crown even can reduce my pain. Because it is like that my nerve is irritated, however, it is a small filling and it is not close to my nerve.
With this being a small fill and was not close to the nerve, you may have a fractured tooth. If you decide to do the crown I would have her prep the tooth and leave the temporary crown on for a month before doing the permanent one. Make sure the tooth settles down before the crown made. If there is a vertical fracture the tooth can’t be saved. The doctor cannot see a vertical fracture on an x-ray. I would still get a second opinion another pair of eyes can hurt to see if they can figure out what is going on.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello again Harold,
I wrote a message to you the 13 december about my small filling was causing me pain. I went to my dentist yesterday in order to suggest that maybe we should place a base, but my dentist said that she did not want to place it. I still have pain, but she said that we should wait a year in order to see if the pain would decrease and if that is not the case, then she would make a crown. I was thinking about to visit a new dentist, because maybe a base could help as you suggested.
– Best regards Dennis.
I would go see a new dentist. Did you ask your dentist if she would like to be in pain for a year before consider doing something. I think that’s wrong of her to expect you to be in pain that long. If the filling was small and only needs a base placed before the filling, then a crown would be over kill. You lose a lot more tooth structure with a crown. So if a filling would work I would go that route first if the second dentist agrees. You might consider in the future asking the dentist to place a base before doing any fillings, so you do not have to put up with so much pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
Sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. You could contact another dentist for a eval on that tooth. Waiting for a year seems like a long time to wait.
I had an excavation done on a a tooth near my wisdom teeth on the bottom. My dentist said it either needs extracted or root canal. This is about 24 hours since the excavation and temporary filling has been placed and my enter jaw and right side of my fave is in extreme pain no swelling. I’m not sure if this is normal pain from the injection of the local anthestetic or if this tooth could have abscessed so quickly. The tooth was broken and down to the nerve when the temporary was put in last night.
I’m think you need a root canal and crown if there is enough tooth structure left to save the tooth. If the decay was that close to the nerve and with the tooth broken I’m pretty sure the decay infected the nerve. With that being said when the temporary filling was place now there is nowhere for the infection to drain and the pressure is probably building up. If all this pain is from the injection site rinse with warm salt water and that should calm down in a few days. Otherwise call your dentist and let them know your symptoms and decide on next course of treatment.
Thank you WFDC team
I have one teeth feeling on last Monday. But my teeth hurt so badly and i can bear the pain. As my doctor advised me to have some pain relief medication, i am taking it at least 3 times a day. However, my tooth still hurt. Is there anything wrong with filling or something else i should do?
I would have your doctor check the bite and possible have the filling redone with a base to see if the tooth will calm down. If the decay was deep you may need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
My friend had her fillings in around 1 -2 months ago and says that they hurt really bad. what should she do? she says it hurts to the point where she’s starting to refuse eating most things ( apparently she’s eating only eating string cheese and some liquids)
She should go see her dentist it maybe a simple fix, perhaps bite adjustment or redoing the filling and placing a base before the new filling if it was not done the first time. If the decay was deep she may need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I’ve had tooth sensitivity which started during pregnancy. The tooth got irritated if I ate anything sweet, hot, or cold. I got the teeth filled in November. I was then able to eat freely again But the place where the dentist injected me is sensitive when I touch it. If I put pressure on the teeth I feel it in the nerve near my nose and above my face. Is something wrong?
I would call your dentist you may need a bite adjustment since hot and cold no longer is bother your teeth but pressure does that make me believe the bite is off.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had two molar teeth filled last Wednesday one o each side.however, the right hand side molar has on and off pain only manageable with dyclofenac.its a week after but still with pain. Sometimes I cant even sleep.when I called the dentist, he suggested a root canal which I fear the most.no x-ray was done before the filling. I already had two teeth removed in 2007 and 2013 and two filled in 1996 and 2007.i still eat soft foods but its like the whole right side line of teeth aches now.am scared. Any advice apart from a root canal treatment? Thanks.
You can give it some more time to settle down since it’s only been a week. You can try some ibuprofen to help with the discomfort. I can not believe the dentist did not take an x-ray first before doing any kind of treatment. The x-ray let’s the doctor see if the decay is deep and if the tooth is already abscessed. If the decay was deep the only solution would be a root canal and crown to preserve the tooth. Most people do quite will with a root canal and most dentist can do them in one appointment, you can always opt for an Endodontist who is the specialist in this field. In this case I would opt for the specialist or at least get a second opinion since your doctor did not follow protocol by not taking an x-ray in the first place. The doctor is just cleaning out the canal from each root and then place’s a filling where the nerve use to be. The tooth should just be tender for a few days, the worse part of a root canal is keeping your mouth open for so long.
Thanks WFDC Team
This past Wednesday on 1/9/18 I went to the dentist and they lasered my gum off my back moler (<ik i spelled that wrong) and after the made red it they put in a filling…. the next day i noticed my mouth really hurting when i ate or drank anything and I noticed I had like 4 canker sores and this isn't for any brushing reasons, I thought maybe it might just be irritation from the lasers but its Sunday 1/14/18 and my moth is still hurting my mom said if on Tuesday if its still there I might go back o the dentist!! Also the part where they made red it it looks to me like the rest of the back moler is growing right underneath it, I've been taking ibuprofen and that's just not working. Anytime I drink or eat anything or even when i talk I just feel the sores there and I feel all the irritations!!!!! Btw the "canker sores" and by my back molers not in the I.side.of the lip or anything like that… Ik this is really long but I need help! Thx
We agree with your mother, please follow up with your dentist.

Three weeks ago, I went into my dentist for a routine scheduled cleaning, where they found I needed 3 cavity fillings. So, the next day, I went back and had them filled all in one day (it only took about 2 hours). All of the fillings were done on my back molars, both sides, and one was really deep and getting close to the nerve.
I went home, and as the numbing wore off I took an ibuprofen to relieve the pain. Ever since then, I have had pain radiating in my jaw. It is the worst at night, usually waking me up in the middle of the night, making me take more ibuprofen. The pain killers work. I have to take one around 2:30PM in the afternoon, and one in the middle of the night around 2:00AM. The pain is in my jaw, not my teeth. It almost feels like the jaw muscle itself. Sometimes it even comes with an ear ache. I have no sensitivity to hot or cold, and it does not hurt when I chew or bite.
After two weeks, I called my dentist explaining the pain I have been feeling, and went in for a check in my bite. They did take some off my bite; however, it did not relieve the pain. They thought I might need a root canal in the tooth with the deep filling, and said to wait a week and give us a call if it gets worse. That night, it was bad! The pain in my jaw was excruciating! So in the morning I called them, and scheduled a root canal for the next day.
The next night before the root canal, I didn’t have any pain. I didn’t even have to take pain killers, but I went in for the root canal anyway just to talk to them. After explaining everything again, we did some tests and x-rays. The x-rays came back positive, nothing was wrong. The cold and hot test was normal, meaning no sensitivity. My bite was fine, they had already corrected it. They canceled the root canal, since there were no obvious signs of needing one.
Their diagnosis was that I have jaw pain from having my mouth open from the fillings. They said call back in a week if the pain is still hurting, and we will prescribe an night guard.
I still have pain, especially at night. What is the cause of it? Please help me. Thank you!
I’m guessing you are clenching due to the new fillings being placed. Most people clench at night but often during stress full times during the day you may be clenching without realizing it. I would get a night guard it really does help relax the jaw and you will be clenching the night guard. The night guard will take the pressure off your teeth.
Thanks WFDC Team
I do a few filling in my mouth last year at a dentist nothing was wrong with my teeth he insisted that X-ray show my teeth is being decay I have the two top area of my jaws done…every since it’s problem nothing cold hot or even Luke warm cannot touch the upper left area of my mouth…now for the pass four days it’s just unbearable pain I have to be taking pain tablets since I am not close home to see my dentist…it seem like a little piece of the filling fell off as well…
I know it’s not convenient to go to another dentist but until you can get home I would go see someone. They should be able to do something to help with the pain, maybe a temporary fill if that’s the cause of the pain or they can start a root canal if needed. Call your dentist so when you get home you can go see them right away.
Thanks WFDC Team
I have a hole on my teeth and my dentist suggested filling the teeth but since her machine was on maintenance she told me to come back in the next two weeks after her machine must have been repaired then when I got back there and explained to her the pains I had this few days and the pain is coming right from inside the hole she now started contemplating either to remove the teeth or refill it so I want to know the best option is it to remove the teeth or to refill it
I would suggest having a filling placed and see if the tooth calms down. You may want to have you dentist place a base down first before the filling. I’m guessing your dentist has taken an x-ray before doing any treatment to see if the nerve is involved. If the decay is into your nerve you will need a root canal and crown or extraction. Do not place tooth paste into the hole because it going on dentin and toothpaste is made for enamel.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello. I had two fillings done on my top molars. One tooth had a very deep cavity, but did not touch the nerve. The cavity was between my tooth. I don’t recall ever feeling sensitivity to sweets. But now since I had the filling, if I eat sweets, I have a pain from it . the pain is right in between my teeth, where the dentist said my cavity was. Is that normal ? Or may there be something wrong with the filing
I would try some sensitive toothpaste to see if that will calm down your teeth. I would also check with your dentist to make them aware you are having sensitivity and see what they suggest.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling about 6 months ago, and it just started hurting, on my top left molar. However, my top right molar also hurts, and I’ve been having recurring pain in random teeth. This is beside the point, but I have a deep hole in my bottom right molar. What do I do?
You need to go see your dentist and have them do a full exam and x-ray. The hole in your tooth is probably decay which will need a filling or a root canal and crown. Your teeth could be sensitive due to grinding and clenching caused by a tooth ache.
Thanks WFDC Team
I have gotten a very deep root canal on my 2 front teeth and they have just now started hurting about 4 months after. And it just hurts not just to hot or cold eben hurts whem i am doing with my mouth what is the the cause please help me. Only 14 yrs
We would suggest you talk to you parents and have them contact your dentist, it could the tooth has an infection.
My tooth got a filling and it suddenly got num when i woke up one morning and its been 3 days and it hurts if i touch it with another tooth or my finger, do i need to get to taking out?
Sorry the delay we had a computer glitch. If your tooth is still hurting when it touches other teeth, I think all you should need is a bite adjustment. I would call your dentist if you have not already.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi. I had a tooth filled in March. At the time it still was sensitive. He said oh that’s not good. Now I can’t hardly bite down on it. For awhile it felt like all my upper right side. I have had a root canal on the one filled. I have TMJ. Feels like my bite is off? It is sore to the touch way up where the skin is above the gum. In mostly one spot.
Sounds like you have had a root canal already. If so has the dentist take another X-ray of that area? If there has been a lot of bone loss the tooth maybe fractured. I’m also assuming your dentist has adjusted the bite so there is no high spots throwing your bite off. Call you dentist
Thanks WFDC Team
I’m having a lot of jaw pain after my recent three fillings that I got on one side of my mouth. The fillings are still pretty sensitive as well and it often feels as though my teeth are moving. I don’t know what to do. I’ve gone back and had them grind down the fillings a bit here and there but my teeth still hurt a lot and my jaw is just in a constant pain, as though I was hit on the side of my face. What should I do?
I would take Ibuprofen to help with the pain. I would talk with your dentist to see if you need a night guard because of the new filling in your mouth you maybe clinching at night. Did you dentist say any of the filling were deep? If so did they place a base down? Your dentist may have to remove the filling and place a base before the filling material. In the future you should always ask to have a base placed, it cost a little but if you are not in pain afterwards it’s worth the price. If any of the filling were close to the nerve you may need a root canal on one of them.
Thanks, WFDC Team
I had filling out in my front teeth last week and since then it hurts to breath I have burning throbbing pain, no matter the temperature everything I drink still send pain into those teeth and into my sinuses.#cant handle this
I would call your dentist you may need a root canal if the bite checks out fine. Ask your dentist if the decay was deep and if it was did they place a base down before the fill was placed. You may need the filling redone with a base to help your teeth calm down. You can also try a sensitive toothpaste to see if the teeth calm down.
Thanks,

testing the site
hello,
last Wednesday 7/18/18, I went into the dentist for a check up after 1.5 years. They found 3 cavities and filled them right away. One of the cavities on the bottom left and was very deep. The dentist advised me to get an Onlay or Inlay placed since I want to avoid a root canal until it is absolutely necessary. (I have one onlay/inlay already on my top back teeth that was successful).
Since I’ve had the procedure done I was taking advil, after about a few days, I stopped taking the advil and since then have had pain that is dull and gnawing in the tooth with the most work done. Every time I take 2 advils the pain is relieved until the medication wears off. The tooth is mildly sensitive to hot and cold but my teeth have always been that way so its not as bothersome but more worried about this pain.
I am going back tomorrow to see the dentist.
Any idea as to why this is happening?
Thank you!
I guessing you are having the onlay or inlay placed tomorrow, with that said the sensitivity should go away once the permanent onlay is placed. Temp filling will not fit as tight causing the pain. It’s a good sign that the pain goes away with Advil.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had 5 teeth worked on last Thursday. My mouth is still hurting pretty bad. I have been taking ibuprofen pretty much all day during the day and have gotten up once or twice in the middle of the night to take some. Is this normal?
Have you called your dentist you may need the bite adjusted. If the ibuprofen is helping with the pain, that’s would be a good sign. It sometimes take a while for teeth to calm down after having work done. The nerve has adjust to a new filling that was placed close to it and the foreign material like amalgam conducts the hot and cold. If you have filling placed in the future you may want a base placed before the filling, this will help with the sensitivity. If you can narrow it down to one tooth that is causing the problem the doctor can remove the filling and place a base down with a new filling.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a gum clean and a filling replaced yesterday. The tooth was throbbing the dentist x rated it and could see no problem the top of the gum still feels very sore and the tooth is still throbbing.
If you had a deep cleaning I would rinse with warm salt water and take some ibuprofen to help with the pain. Thing should calm down soon. Since your dentist did not see any decay that’s a good sign, if the pain persist I would call your dentist again.
Thanks, WFDC Team
I had a cavity, my dentist said it was early stage. So she removed it and firstly placed temprory filling in it. Two days later today she put permanent filling.
I didn’t had any issue after temprory filling but today after permanent one I am having pain. Even if bite from the other site, I feel pain in filling.
Is there issue with filling? My dentist also cleaned my teeth.
If the bite feels like you are hitting that first you will need your bite adjusted. I would rinse with warm salt water and take some ibuprofen to help with the pain. I would also call your doctor if thing do not calm down or if you bite is high.
Thanks WFDC Team
Facial drooping after molar filling
I would massage the area and call your dentist to see what they have to say.
Thanks WFDC Team
I went to the dentist several months ago to have four cavities removed. When the got to my lower left tooth, during the procedure, they busted to tooth but glued it back together. Ever since then I have not been without pain and have relied on ibuprofen throughout the day. What do I do?
I would call your dentist you may need a crown or a root canal . The tooth may need to be extracted, depending how far down the tooth cracked. You can always get a second opinion.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I got a filing on Tuesday and the first night I had pain where I couldn’t sleep cause it was so bad then since then at the beginning of the day the pain isn’t so bad but later in the day the pain gets bad but lately it won’t hurt at all in the morning then during the day the pain will come back and at night gets really painful what should I do?
I would call your dentist I’m thinking you need your bite adjusted. Your symptoms indicate that you are hitting It hard all day causing the ligament to feel bruised.
Thanks WFDC Team
hi
I got a filling done 3 weeks ago. it was really deep. initially after the filling, I felt lot pain throughout day. Dentist told me to take Ibuprufen 600mg tid + antibiotics. After 2 weeks. I felt like getting a root canal done as I was tired of takin medications. I started doing salt water rinses, pain started to go away. I stopped taking painkillers.also, I tried using toothpaste for sensitivity, it helped a little. now, I don’t feel pain all the time, but there is a little heaviness I feel on that side. my tooth is sensitive to cold, and sometimes hot(not always), no pain on biting and bite is also fine. but when I take cold water, there is sharp pain that goes away leaving a little heaviness. or after having coffee, there is pain but goes away in 10-15mins leaving a little heaviness. sometimes there is also mild headache on that side. should I get a root canal done or is my tooth taking time to get better?
You can wait to see what happens, but with the symptoms you are having and the fact that the decay was deep you may end up with a root canal.
With your tooth still hurting 10-15 minutes after drinking something hot is not a good sign either. I would consult with your dentist and see how long you should put up with these symptoms or if he thinks you should just do the root canal and be done with it.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a deep filling done today and I have had pulsing pain all day do I need root canal?
With the filling being so new things to look for hot and cold that doesn’t go away after a few minutes. High bite can also be a problem so pay attention when you are biting down to make sure that is not the first tooth you are hitting. If the pain doesn’t go away call your dentist to have him take a look, you may need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC TEAM
Hi, I’ve had a deep filling in my molar and it’s now been three weeks and all of a sudden my tooth is sensitive to pressure. It doesn’t hurt it just feels bruised but I’m worried that if I go dentist they will insist on a root canal which I want to avoid. What would you tecommend?
I would call your dentist you may just have a high bite and just need an adjustment. I would start with that first and if symptoms get worse then your only option maybe a root canal.
Thanks WFDE Team
Hi I need a root canal so went in yesterday but the dentist couldn’t do the work as I couldn’t open my mouth wide enough she has put a filling in it. The tooth next to it is hurting now to the point I’m awake most of the night is this normal my dentist is rude and doesn’t really explain much so I’m not actually sure what she done but does surrounding teeth hurt after a deep filling?
You need to go see an Endodontist who specializes in root canals. Just putting a filling is not a good solution if you have an infection. The dentist could have just sealed up the outlet for the infection to come out. With no outlet for the infection, can cause swelling which could affect the ligaments around adjacent teeth. Last I would find a new dentist you have every right to know in detail what is going on with your health. Check with friend to see who they go to and find out how they are treated to help make a good decision.
Thanks WFDC Team
Thanks for the info

I had 2 fillings 3 months or 4 months ago and now I can feel pain already what can you suggest please? it’s been 3 days since it’s aching.
I would contact you dentist and get an x-ray to see if something is going on around the roots. You may just need a bite adjustment or possibly need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had multiple fillings done at once. Only one of them is very sensitive to cold and hot. It almost feels like it hurts my jaw if temperature changes. Today my jaw feels like it hurts for no reason. 2 days ago I went to the dentist and he did a test and concluded I do not need a root canal, but he was not helpful in why my tooth is so uncomfortable. It has been about 2 weeks since my fillings.
Did your doctor check the bite to see if it’s high that can cause a lot of problems. Did they advise you to take some ibuprofen for the pain. Did they place a base down before doing the filling, if not you may want to consider having the filling redone with a base since there are no indications for a root canal. It should only cost you for the base and of course the down side you will need to get numb again.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I went to the dentist today and I was expecting a filling but they told me I needed a root canal. So the put in a medicated temporary filling but now the tooth hurts. It’s like a dull constant ache. It wasn’t hurting at all before I went to the dentist. Why does it hurt now will it stop?
It’s going to be sore just from having work done on the tooth but should calm down in a day or two. In the meantime take some ibuprofen to help with the pain. If the pain get worse call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
Weird question. I just had a series of cavities redone, and I’m having some issues intermittently with my lower canine teeth aching. These teeth were not altered in any way, just molars and premolars. Is referred pain like this common?
Referred pain can be caused by the bands and wedges used to form the other fillings. The pain should go away with in a day or two.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi, I had 2 fillings done 15 hour ago on a bottom front tooth. I feel a constant aching which sometimes almost goes away and then gets worse again. Pain goes up and down. No sensitivity to hot and cold. I don’t touch with that tooth against the upper tooth. So there is never any pressure on it. The injection side also still hurts a lot when I move my lower jaw. I’m not used to having any pain after fillings. It’s an aching kind of pain. I really hope I don’t need a root canal as I’m totally against it and had all of them removed in Germany. If there is no hot and cold sensitivity but an almost ongoing aching, is this normal?
It’s probably sensitivity for just having work done. It’s a good sign that it not hot and cold sensitive, you can use ibuprofen to help with the discomfort. If thing get worse I would call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling done on my upper molar its been around a week… It doesn’t exactly feel sensitive until i drink something a bit over room temperature cold . suddenly the pain shots up spreads around and then fades away with a lil lingering sensitivity even that disappears within seconds. I don’t experience the same with hot stuff. The dentist told me its nothing so should i take over the counter medicines and wait it out?
I would add sensitive tooth paste along with the ibuprofen, since it’s cold sensitive and it doesn’t linger. If things get worse call your dentist.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I’ve had 4 cavities filled within the past 6 months and not a day after getting the last one done they all started falling out. I have one left and I can still see the dark decay through it as well as the new material was put over my gums so it’s been chipping away no matter how carefully I floss. Should I even go back? I’m considering a new dentist.
I think you are on the right track to get a new dentist. I would have lose faith too with all the work that was done is falling out. Check with friends to see who they go too and if they like the quality of work being done.
Thanks WFDC Team
I have had 3 fillings done (top right). One filling was done on a wisdom tooth. After this (rough) procedure I had a constant ‘humming pain’ in that area and a very sharp pain to cold for a whole week. I decided to go back. It was another dentist and he told me that my bite wasn’t correct and adjusted it. Now it has been another week. The constant humming pain is gone for the most part, but my wisdom tooth is still hypersensitive to cold. Could it be the dentist ‘screwed up’ and missed or damaged something? Can anybody advise me what to do? Back again? Thank you.
I would try some sensitive toothpaste to see if this will help the cold sensitivity. I would keep in contact with your dentist so he is aware of the problem and also see what they advise you to do. I may just take some time for the tooth to calm down with the bite being off.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling about three weeks ago. I could not bite or use the side I had filling done at all. It causes pain and sensitivity even gently down done on it. I went back to my dentist this week, she said it the high and removed it a little. It felt a lot better after that, but I still couldn’t chew things normally. Feel like sharp pain and sensitive to it. What do you think is causing this? Any suggestions?
Your tooth is going to take some time to settle down think about someone punching your arm 24/7 for the last three weeks you would be very bruised. Take ibuprofen until the tooth settles down it may take a week or longer since your teeth still hit even when you’re not eating.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had 2 very deep fillings done to two of my back top teeth on the same side, this was done yesterday around 5pm. my mouth hurts very bad and Tylenol is not helping. is this normal
It’s common for your mouth to be sore right after having work done. The anesthetic is wearing off and it tender where the shot was given and teeth do not like to be worked on, that’s why we get them numb. I would try ibuprofen for the pain and if things remain sore after a few day without improvement call your dentist. With the filling being so deep you may need a root canal but give them some time to settle down. Now that the anesthetic is worn off make sure you are not hitting those teeth first, if you are you’re going to need the bite adjusted.
Thanks WFDC Team
Dear Harold, I had my decayed wisdom tooth removed and a deep filling to the tooth next to it. The filling was done 7 days ago and has been very sensitive to cold. I had accidentally bitten some meat 3 days ago came with a sharp pain to that tooth and the constant pain has been persisted all the time unless I took ibuprofen but the pain came back each time after 15 hours or so. I went back to the dentist today and he checked out and did some height adjustments. He said the persistent pain after the bite was caused by the large filling and it’s too close to the nerve. He said I can give it time (don’t know how long) and let him know if I need to do any adjustments again or may need to do a root canal which I am not willing to do.
With the bite being adjusted thing should calm down within the week. If Ibuprofen helps with the pain for 15 hours I’m think thing will calm down. If the decay was close to the nerve and if the tooth does not settle down then you are looking at a root canal or extraction. Sound like you are not a fan of root canal and crown, but it’s better choice than not having a tooth. If you choose an extraction there is always an option of implant and crown to replace the missing tooth.
… answer to your other question if you are taking Ibuprofen for the pain and you do not go over recommended dose you should be ok, but check with your doctor on this concern.
Thanks WFDC Team
Went to the dentist on Tuesday for the lower left side to be deep cleaned….then went back the next day to get 2 fillings on the same side in my lower left molars that were causing me discomfort
One was very deep and I had to be given more novocaine during the procedure because it was close to the nerve and I started to feel it! The dentist only did a temporary filling in that tooth and said I might need a root canal if it doesn’t get better.
It’s been 2 days now and I have sort of a dull annoying toothache ( no sensitivity to heat or cold or when I bite) and my jaw is extremely sore.
Is it normal to have these pains 2 days after a deep filling?
Any info would be great!
It’s a good sign the teeth are not hot and cold sensitive. The area could be sore due to having so much work done or it could all be due to being open for long periods of time. I would keep in contact with your dentist if thing do not improve.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling last week, It was fine before they did anything to my tooth, but once they did a filling, my tooth started hurting, I went back Monday to file it just a little, it stills hurting, when I eat, drink or even bite down, I cannot drink or eat anything, I brush my teeth 3 to 4 times a day, and it still doesn’t help the pain go away, should I look into a root canal, or get it removed?
I would check with your dentist and see if the decay was close to the nerve? If the decay was not close they may just need to redo the filling and place a base down first. In the future I would have a base place before all fillings. I always have a base placed because I do not like putting up with the pain. Most time the insurance will not pay for it, but it’s worth the cost not to have to wait for the tooth to calm down. If the decay was close to the nerve you may need a root canal but I would try the base first. Extraction should be your last choice because then you will have to go with a missing tooth or do an implant and crown. Brushing that many time a day will not help with the pain, you can try some Ibuprofen to see if that helps.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I had a filling done yesterday on a class 2 caries in one of my upper left molar the dentist said, It was deep, no pain during or directly after the procedure but last night and this morning I am getting an occasional pain in the area the tooth, there is no pain to sensitivity of hot or cold and my jaw on that side of the tooth is swollen a little and it hurts when I press it, I am really hoping to steer clear of extraction i also get an annoying pain when I lay down to rest. Any tips or advice are welcomed. Thank you.
Well considering it’s a new filling I would rinse with warm salt water and take some ibuprofen and see if things calm down. Teeth do not like to be worked on and may take a few days to settle down. If things do not improve I would call your dentist and discuss the problems you are experiencing .
Any advice?
I would call your dentist it sound like all you need is a bite adjustment.
Thanks WFDC Team
I got my temporary filling done three days before.
My tooth Is still hurtIng frequently.
I have my appointment for permanent filling After 15 days. Please tell me how to treat with the pain for now?
I would try ibuprofen if that doesn’t help with the pain, you may want to wait on the permanent filling. You may need a root canal, I would consult with your dentist on this.
Thanks WFDC Team
I am having deep cavity in my tooth docter did temporary filling in it.And its hurting me frequently. Now how would i came to know that i needed permanent filling or rct.
With the decay being deep I’m thinking it was very close to the nerve and the doctor put the temporary filling in to see if the tooth would settle down and it’s not. With that said I’m thinking you will probably need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi, Dr. I have a tooth that was filled that has been bothering me for months. My dentist wants to redo the filling. But, he’s also adding 2 things:
D9910 Desensitizer
D3120 Pulp cap-indirect
Is the Pulp cap-indirect similar to what you call a “base”? Also, my concern is the filling isn’t really deep to begin with and my research about this pulp cap seems to suggest that you would purposely get close to the pulp just to put this material. I’m wondering if that will somehow put me in a worse state if the current filling isn’t even close to the pulp to begin with?
Thanks for any info.
I think that would be a good idea to put down the base (indirect pulp cap) it helps with the sensitivity of a new filling and the decay doesn’t have to be close to the nerve to place a base. Even if the decay was small and not close to the nerve it add an extra insulation to protect the nerve for cold or hot. I always have a base placed before a filling because my teeth tend to be sensitive to new fillings and I do not want to wait months for my teeth to settle down.
Thanks WFDC Team
Thanks. So, it won’t put my tooth in a worse state because my filling is deeper than it started out being? I’m trying to figure out then what the other thing would be for: Desensitizer.
They should not be going any deeper than the decay was. They are only removing the new filling and putting down the base and a new filling. As far as the desensitizer goes I would just us a tooth paste for sensitive teeth Colgate or Sensodyne are both good products.
Thanks WFDC Team
I got it done today, they did something different than a base I guess. They did a liner called DyCal and something called Gluma.
Congratulations! DyCal is the base and Gluma is the desensitizer.
Hopefully you tooth will feel better.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had two fillings yesterday, and one was 5 sur (not sure what that means).
after the freezing wore off it hurt really bad, i took two advil and that helped so i could sleep.
this morning it’s just really sore. my gums feel super sore and i can’t open my mouth wide. the pain isn’t throbbing anymore as bad anymore but it feels a little throbby.
is this normal? my dentist is closed after today for the long weekend so i’m not sure if i should wait it out.
i’ve never experienced pain after a filling before.
The injection site always is very tend when it waking up, warm salt water and massaging the are would help along with the Advil you took. The 5 sur means 5 surface were included in the filling. It’s a good sign that the throbbing is less and should continue to improve over time. If things get worse call your dentist when they get back tomorrow.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi! I recently had a silver filling replaced with a composite one. It was a deep filling according to the dentist. I didn’t have any pain in my tooth previously, but it was starting to crack along the side. Everything went well, but I started having a sharp pain at the top of my tooth when eating just about anything. I don’t have sensitivity to hot or cold and the pain is only there when the tooth is aggravated. Essentially, it doesn’t throb or hurt on it’s own. I went back to the dentist a week after the filling and he filed my tooth again to adjust the bite a little (my bite has always felt totally normal and I have no pain when I bite down without food). He did a pulp test and took two more images. Everything looked normal. He tapped on my teeth with a broad instrument, not the thin “pick” looking one, and it felt fine.
However, I’m back home now and I continue to have the pain. Again, only comes from when I press directly on the tooth from above or eat something. Is there something wrong with the filling? I really don’t think this is an issue of healing at this point.
The dentist told me to take Advil 3x per day for three days and keep him posted. I’m going back for a similar procedure in 2 weeks for another tooth but I don’t know if I can trust him! Any advice or feedback?
I would have your dentist place a base before he places the new composite. I always have a base placed before any filling, think of it as a blanket for the nerve.
I would have your dentist redo the first filling with a base before doing any more work. That you do not have second area sensitive. Hopefully this will do the trick and you can continue on with treatment. I hope this info helps.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had a filling of my bottom front tooth 5 days ago. It was a large filling the dentist said but it’s not close to the root. My jaw was hurting very badly for 2 days as was the whole part of my mouth. Now during the day I am okay mostly and while I feel very slight discomfort I am quite fine. But as it becomes later in the day a dull ache starts on that tooth. And by the time it’s midnight the pain is quite bad. I have been waking up with throbbing pain the past few days. 600mg of Motrin helps but I am really worried that this could be somethjng more.
I went to the dentist today and the X-ray looks perfect according to him.
I leave on vacation in 2 days so I am extremely anxious about this situation.
On one hand I don’t want an unnecessary root canal, on the other I don’t want this pain to get worse on vacation.
What could this be? Also wanted to note that I have sjogrens.
If the ibuprofen is helping with the pain that’s a good sign. I think you will be ok the tooth just needs to settle down and it also helps the decay was not close to the nerve. Contact your dentist when your back from vacation if it still is bothering you.
Thanks,
WFDC Team
I had a deep filling done 3 days ago. My dentist said it was quite close to the nerve. It was painful during the procedure even after the local anesthesia, and now I have a dull toothache in that tooth. The pain hasn’t gotten any better in the past 3 days. Should I wait any longer or contact my dentist?
I would call your dentist if the pain doesn’t lessen with the use of Ibuprofen. Since the decay was deep and close to the nerve you may need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had 3 fillings done 2 weeks ago and once the freezing wore off I was in a lot of pain. I went back to the dentist twice to have the bite fixed. The bite feels okay now. The pain has started to get better as hot and cold do not bother me anymore but it still hurts when I bite down and chew on that tooth. It was a deep filling and my dentists advised that it could take months to heal. Please advise if this is normal.
Yes this is normal for area to be sensitive with a deep filling and the bite being off but it’s a good sign that hot and cold is not bothering you. I would take ibuprofen to help with the ligaments around the tooth because the bite was high. Think of it as a bad bruise that needs to heal.
Thanks WFDC TEAM
Hello.
I got fillings done on the 31. About 2 weeks ago. One was a planned one and one was new cuz I was in pain for 9 days( sensitivity, sharp pains when biting )
Right after the pain started…
eating causes sharp sharp pains on both sides. So I gave it a week.
She lowered the one filling on the bottom left and left it at that. Few says later my whole jaw was in agony.
I go back cuz now two of my fillings are sensitive to the bite. Sharp lingering pains.
They lowered the one filling on the top right but On the side of the tooth feels rough… could this be causing the pain. He said it was hitting a nerve and I could jusy need a replaced filling
The other tooth however is sensitive to everything sharp pains when biting hot and cold so I’m getting a root canal.
I’m worried about the other tooth though. Hurts to bite on and when I floss it on side sends sharp pains as well but not sensitive to cold or hott feels like somthint is between my tooth. But the dentist saw nothing
If the decay was hitting the nerve which means the decay was into the nerve and you will need a root canal. If the new filling Is sharp I would let your dentist know so he can adjust it but the rough filling is not causing the tooth to hurt. The rough filling could hurt your tongue or cheeks. If you would feel more comfortable with a second opinion to make sure a root canal is what you need and they could also look at the other tooth that feels like something is caught between your teeth. This way you can make a sound decision with you dental health.

I had a filling on a broken tooth that had an existing filling in it 4 weeks ago. Sensitivey has been on an off with no major issue. It’s still a little sensitive and I had a bad night’s sleep the other night and know I was grinding teeth and it’s increased the sensitivity. No pain after hot, cold or pressure. I’d say it was more sensitive around my gum than my tooth maybe. Is 4 weeks too long for this to continue. It was a deep filling.
It a good sign that hot and cold are not bothering you. You can rinse with warm salt water to help with the gums being sensitive. If you do not have a night guard you should talk to your dentist about one. Grinding and clinching can cause a whole lot of problem with your teeth and tissue. I would call your dentist and talk to them it doesn’t sound like you are in a root canal situation.
Thanks WFDC Team
Thanks for your help ?
Yes I hope every settles down for you! Get a night guard so you can grind on that and not on your teeth.

Had a filling done yesterday, have had a mostly constant pain since the numbness wore off. Is this normal? It doesn’t seem to hurt when I keep cool water in my mouth but otherwise, I’ve had pain and have taken 4 extra strength Tylenol but that doesn’t seem to do anything.
It does sometimes to take a few days for your tooth to calm down. I would try some ibuprofen for the inflammation. How does your bite feel? If that’s the first tooth you are hitting you will need your bite adjusted. I would call your dentist and let them know how you are feeling and ask if the filling was deep and did they put a base down before the new filling.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello. Having a tooth decay in the back tooth where the tooth meets the gum, I went to the dentist and he have placed a filling. he said that the decay didn’t get to the pulp and that it wasn’t supposed to hurt. after experiencing pain and sensitivity I went back and he have replaced the filling, put on something to block the inner nerve from the outside irritations. since then I experience terrible pain, usually starts in the evening into the night and goes away at the end of the night. some days it hurts, some days I can forget about it until the evening comes. It’s been almost 2 weeks now since the 2nd filling. the pain doesn’t get worse but doesn’t get better. after reading Weston Price’s research I want to avoid a root cannal if possible. the dentist (who is super proffesional) said that he had never seen anything like that. the filling wasn’t deep. It’s the 3rd time a dentist tells me the same words “I’ve never seen anything like that”, reffering to my severe reaction to treatments. Is there a chance for the nerve to heal by itself if the pain doesn’t go away after 2 weeks? He says we can wait some more or go for a root cannal, whatever I choose. I will appreciate your comment. Thank you
I would take ibuprofen to see if that will help with the sensitivity. It could be the ligament around the tooth are inflamed with all the work the tooth has been through. Your dentist has put a base down to protect the nerve and you did not mention that the tooth is hot or cold sensitive which is a good sign. It may just take time for the tooth to calm down. You may be a grinder or clenching your teeth which can cause the ligaments to feel bruised. Keep you dentist informed on how your tooth is feeling he may suggest a night guard.
Thanks WFDC Team
I have got a fill in about a couple weeks ago one of my tooth’s has a cavity close to the nerve so the doctor gave me a fill in now a couple weeks like 2 weeks are so I can feel a dull ache like it’s their but not. What should I do?
I would take some ibuprofen to help with the dull ache. If it gets worse call your dentist but it a good sign it’s not hot and cold sensitive. Watch for swelling or hot and cold sensitivity that doesn’t go away. With the decay being close to the nerve you may need a root canal if you start having more symptoms.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi, I have a filling on my front tooth which my dentist said it is so close to the nerve maybe I should have a root canal but instead she filled it but I still have tiny constant pain ,and it scares me alot cause I dont wanna have aroot canal my front tooth ,what should I do?
I would call your dentist to let them know what your symptoms are. If it’s not been that long since you got the filling was placed it may be normal healing time for the tooth to calm down. Front teeth are easy to do a root canal on they typically only have one root with easy access. You will need to follow up with a crown after the root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
I had 3 deep cavities filled today on 3 different teeth side by side without any numbing (I don’t like to feel numb). Pain was minimal if any. The dentist told me that on one tooth, the filling was very close to the nerve and I would likely need a root canal. She told me to come back if I experienced ANY pain. Well, this evening I do have pain. I have always had pain with my fillings, though not this much. It’s not unbearable, rather nagging. The fear is worse. I feel like it is bound to hurt since she drilled so close to the nerve. It feels throbbing and kind of cold/tingly along my jaw line. Do I need to worry or is this normal following a deep filling?
If the tooth becomes very hot and cold this would mean the nerve is infected and you would need a root canal. It is normal to have pain to some degree after teeth are worked on but it should gradually calm down. Call your dentist if the pain gets too bad.
Thanks WFDC Team
Do i need a root canal or bite adjustment?
I had deep cavities on both incisors and got fillings. They were both a little too high but I couldn’t tell when I was numb. The left side #12 is the higher one. I didn’t think much of it. A week later and while eating I get shooting pain on #12. Since then its been throbbing. When I wake up in the morning its not throbbing/nothing wrong with it. Throughout the day it’ll start throbbing /worse at end of day. A little sensitive to cold depending on how bad the throbbing is. It also makes the tooth next to it throb & sensitive sometimes. I called my dentist and he just said if there’s any pain after a week then it needs a root canal. Didn’t say anything about adjusting the bite.
Do I really need a root canal? Or should I ask him to shave that side down a little ?
Its been a little over 3 weeks since the fillings btw.
That’s way too long to put up with a bite that’s off. Get your bit adjusted Good luck.
WFDC Team
If the bite is off I would start with a bite adjustment. Do not do a root canal until the bite has been adjusted. If your dentist doesn’t agree then I would get a second opinion. I would wait at least a week for things to calm down, it should feel some what better right away but the ligaments around the teeth will take time to calm down. You can also take ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hello. I had a replacement for an amalgama filling (a very old one) a month ago, the doctor said it was deep in one place and close to the nerve. The tooth didn’t hurt with the amalgama and the whole month after the new filling. And few days ago it reacted to the rinsing with hot water (doesn’t hurt when eating). + I can only chew on this side (and been doing it for 2 months) and the tooth has a slight wedge defect. Should I give the tooth a little more time or is it need a RCT?
With your symptoms of heat sensitivity and not being able to chew on that side I’m thinking you probably need a root canal. I would call your dentist waiting at this point not going to settle your tooth down.
Thanks WFDC TEAM
No, no. I can chew all right with this side (the other one is getting ready for the crowns to be put on) and been doing it for the past two monts. The thing that bothers me is this heat sensitivity.
Heat sensitivity is not a good sign the nerve could be dying. I would talk to your dentist about what you are feeling with that tooth.

Hello, I was having a lot of pain and sensitivity in what felt like a few teeth – both top and bottom on right side of mouth. Tried a lot of OTC stuff before going to dentist. But then when pain and sensitivity didn’t subside, I called my dentist and made an appt. He took X-rays and examined me and couldn’t find a reason for pain, etc. So he adjusted my bite a bit. This helped for like a day or 2 and then pain and sensitivity returned. I continued with OTC stuff for several more weeks. Then I had to go for my 6-month cleaning. At that appt. I complained again about my teeth on right side. The dentist said to come back and he would replace an old filling (in my mouth since the 70’s) and see if that helps. Following the cleaning, my teeth felt better. Almost cancelled filling appt. (Also, I grind my teeth at night – very bad. So I bought an OTC Night Guard and I have been using it ever since.) But then changed my mind and decided to have the new filling put in after all. Went 2 weeks ago. The dentist said there was some tooth decay and replaced the filling. I was sore for a day or 2 but continued wearing the Night Guard and after a few days, I was feeling much better. Then the Night Guard broke so I stopped wearing it. I didn’t want to buy another one right away because following the filling, my teeth were feeling better. So I stopped wearing the Night Guard and waited to see what would happen. This was a few days ago. Then a little bit on Sunday, most of the day yesterday and today – my teeth hurt very bad again. They aren’t as sensitive to hot and cold or certain drinks but they still hurt a lot. When I press on lower, right bottom teeth or the teeth on the top right excluding the recently filled tooth – there isn’t any pain. But when I press on the tooth that was just filled – it hurts a lot. What should I do? Do you think I need a Root Canal? I’ve replaced the Night Guard and starting wearing it again last night. Should I wear it for a few more nights and see what happens? Or should I call my dentist right away? He did say that IF the new filling didn’t work, he would probably have to do a Root Canal. Please help. Thank you, God Bless, and Stay Safe!
I think you need the night guard it sound like you are clinching and grinding at night. Your dentist can have a night guard made that should last a lot longer than the over the counter ones. Clinching all night long can cause your teeth to feel bruised. I would hold off on the root canal and see how the night guard does. Stress has caused a lot of people to grind their teeth with what going on this year. Hang in their 2021 is right around the corner. I wear a lower NG every night and it is very relaxing. Upper NG in my opinion is too bulky.

Hi. I had a deep filling done 3 days ago. When I got home it started to hurt really bad but then stopped until the next day which again was brief, but then when I went to bed it started to hurt and did so all night..woke up with the pain which wasn’t too bad but then took a walk to shop in the cold yesterday and started to hurt and hasn’t stopped since, it’s on and off.. might not hurt couple of mins then very strong pain again, then slightly less painful but it’s constantly there, switches from bad pain to no pain to not too bad pain etc. Also depends what position I’m in, also when I walk and do stuff it seems to be less. Do I just need to ride it out until it’s recovered from the drilling and cleaning and filling? Does it just take a little time to stop being painful.
First make sure you are not hitting that tooth first it may just need a bite adjustment. Teeth do need some time to calm down after a filling is placed. It’s a good sign the pain is not constant. If the bite is fine, then try taking Tylenol for a few days to see if things calm down. If you tooth becomes a constant hot and cold sensitive, then you will more than likely need a root canal.

Hello. I had a medium filling done three mths ago , sadly it didn’t bond well , so i had to get it redone 4 days ago . its been hell !right after the procedure my tooth was throbbing , hurting , my ear was hurting , my jaw , my gums everything was pulsating ecc..it was constant, i took a pain killer and felt better and immediately visited the dentist again who checked the tooth and said it was an healing reaction and to give it time. It was all fine for around three days but today it started hurting again when i chew , the pain reaches my ear then subsides. its better than it was before and not constant but i am desperate . i cant keep visitng the dentist every other day. Do i wait or should i call him again ? i cant deal with this anymore
I would call your dentist again. Did they check the bite to make sure you are not hitting that tooth first and see if they put a base down before the filling? You may be someone who need a base place before the filling. I’m someone who reminds the dentist every time I have a filling done to place the base. It’s a good sign the pain is not constant, you can take Tylenol for a few days straight and see if it calms down.
Thanks, WFDC
It was interesting to know that it is extremely common for teeth to be sensitive after getting a tooth filling. My 12-year-old son has recently pointed out a sharp pain in one of his right side teeth, and it is probably a cavity. I will try and find a reputable dentist that will be able to fill his cavity and relieve him of any pain.
Teeth usually have some degree of pain after a filling has been placed. What you want to watch for if the pain lingers and the tooth becomes hot or cold sensitive. Ibuprofen should help with the sensitivity.

I recently spotted blackening of one of my upper tooth which had partly chipped of a few months back. I visited a dentist and he said it was a cavity which he cleaned and put in a temporary filling for trial basis to see if the filling hurt or not. He took an xray and said that it doesnt show anything too serious but if the temporary filling hurts a root canal might be needed. I waited for a few days and went back since there was no pain or discomfort so he cleaned up and put a permanent filling in the cavity. 12 days after the filling, apart from extreme sensitivity it was fine but on the 12th day while eating some fried food I experienced a sharp shooting pain in the teeth with the filling which lasted for a minute and since then while chewing food I am experiencing this sharp shooting pain at a certain angle at times, which goes away in a minute . It happens at a certain angle and while chewing or pulling only maybe with rotating motion or backward forward motion, also it doesnt happen always and apart from that there is extreme sensitivity. I revisited the dentist and he says everything is fine and he cannot spot any change in the filling if this pain persists he said a root canal should be done. He also did a tap test at multiple angles but I did not experience the shooting pain that time only a little soreness. Also the pain I experience only lasts for a minute and is not persistent it goes back to completely normal in about a minute and only the sensation remains. He also prescribed sensodent k toothpaste and sequel ad mouthwash for sensitivity. I have used them they help for sensitivity for a while but that chewing pain is still there so I end up avoiding eating on that side. Almost 35 days after the first filling I went for a second opinion to another dentist and she removed my previous filling and replaced it with a new one.. she said everything looked fine but the filling came of in pieces and was too high on one side where i was feeling tenderness in my gums. She put a temporary filling and waited for a few days, i didn’t experience any pain while chewing biting etc thus she went ahead with the new permanent filling.. I have had significant relief from sensitivity but its still there.. the temporary filling was more comfortable than the permanent one.. i am eating softer things and there is no chewing pains so far as of yet.. it has been 5 days to the new filling.. but I have sensitivity and my gums feel tender on both sides of my teeth with the filling.. so while eating if food touches the gums they feel tender and slightly painful..not swelling or change of colour, doesnt hurt much but not very comfortable. She said this should settle down and suggested salt water gargles. While normaly if I dnt fidget with my tongue i dnt feel the tooth but if i fidget too much therè is a slight ache to it.. like something pulling from inside. Dont know what to do since the doctors insist all is fine
i had a crack in my tooth , dentist took x rays , no infection, filled tooth and crack. the nerve in tooth was sensitive for a week, pain went completely away for 1 month. now its acting up again, but the pain is not all day. it may hurt for about 30 seconds , then no pain for a few minutes, this cycle is repeated for a few hours, then no pain for rest of day . can eat , brush , or whatever. should i get a root canal, or extraction, or just wait. also, i dont need pain killers when tooth or nerve acts up.
Hello. I had a Deep filling with a pulp cap done on top molar December 16th 2020.. The day after I felt ok jaw was very sore.. I have TMJD and my mouth was held open for 1hr 30+ min.. Well today I’m experiencing more achey feeling then before I’m able to apply pressure to tooth but its like a shockwave of discomfort and sometimes a stabbing pain through bother my molars on that side.. Could it be my TMJD referring pain or should I give my body more time to heal..
i just got a deep filling close to the nerve like a week ago. The first day is was aching but when away. I was flossing and the pain came back but like a dull ache and sometimes it would get worse than better. After three days the pain was gone for like 2 days. So I when to the dentist and they gave me some ibuprofen. I didn’t get the ibuprofen until like two day when I got it the pain was bad but once I took the pill and no pain. SO I just wonder how long does it take to settle? would I need a root canal?

Hello! I had a white filling done on a lower molar a month ago (to repair a small/shallow crack on the distal end of the tooth). Afterwards, I experienced pain only when biting down on hard/crunchy foods. Another dentist who I saw said that my bite was high and adjusted the filling to correct this. Although I was told that the pain should gradually go away, it’s been a week since the adjustment and I am still feeling the same exact pain when biting down on crunchy foods. I have no pain with hot or cold food/liquids, or when I chew on the other side of my mouth. What could be going on?
I went to a new dentist and had fillings done on 12/3/2020. I had NO issues before I saw him. One filling was done on an upper wisdom tooth, and I re-done on the neighboring molar due to new decay, that tooth also has a crown. I experienced pain, went back and the dentist did x-rays and polished the teeth. At first it felt a little better, but the pain got progressively worse. I went back a week later, the dentist partially replaced the molar, and said that he didn’t see anything physically wrong and said I can go to an endodontist. I asked if it could be infected and he said no. When the Novocain wore off, I was in pain, and called for the referral. He put me on an antibiotic saying it was ‘protocol’. I dislike being on antibiotics if not necessary, and have NEVER heard of this?
I have rct on my tooth and it wasn’t done properly. There is little space between the rct tooth and normal tooth. Food used to stuck at that place and bleed. When I visited a dentist she said that the adjacent tooth has started to decay due to food sticking in the gap. She filled my cavity but my problem isn’t solved. After two weeks of filling, I experienced bleeding from the same point. All the tooth nerves are normal, no problem in rool canal. I don’t know what to do?
I had a deep filling recently and after that my tooth has constant pain, even more than before it.
The pain is not so awful to prevent me from sleeping, however it’s still quite unpleasant. I feel almost ok in the morning, but after breakfast or just a drink of hot water this tooth begin to pain and doesn’t calm down until the night.
More than two weeks had passed. I have a sensitive teeth and my dentist believes it may need more time to head, but I don’t feel that something get better.
Should I insist on root canal or wait even more?
I’ve had fillings done two years ago, since then a tooth on my left side hurts when I chew. I’ve been looking into getting it fixed abroad, as they seem to be more diligent to protect their reputation. Can anything actually be done in my case? Would redoing the filling fix the issue?
I had my my teeth filled months ago, it didn’t hurt until these past few days. The pain is bearable, but bothering me. The pain is on off, if bitten, the pain lessen. What should I do?
I would call your dentist so they can do some test on your tooth to make sure you do not need a root canal.
Thanks, WFDC Team
Hey! 4 and a bit weeks ago I had two composite fillings placed, both with a (thin, I think) base, an upper molar and a lower molar. I had zero pain before treatment, but a pretty big cavity apparently in both. One of the fillings was very deep/close to the nerve, but the dentist said she’s pretty confident she “saved it from RCT”.
3 weeks passed and I went back to the dentist as I was getting pretty intense sensitivity to cold (and hot) in both fillings. Sometimes there is very very mild spontaneous aching/”tingling” in the top (deep filled) tooth, which always comes towards the end of the day after meals, and improves with brushing/an ibuprofen. The dentist said she wasn’t worried at all and would expect the sensitivity to last “maybe even weeks/months” and that in future she’d put more base down when filling my teeth. However, I’m really worried I may be doing damage by leaving it and not pursuing RCT.
There is no discolouration on either tooth. It doesn’t hurt if I tap on either tooth, but chewing extremely hard/crunchy food is uncomfortable. If I hit a certain spot in the upper tooth when chewing hard food there’s almost a “sticking” sensation like I’ve bitten toffee and am pulling at the filling by separating my teeth. Other times it feels more like a slightly sharper pain which gets more intense as I bite slowly down.
Sensitivity to hot and cold fades quickly after removing the stimulus, within 2-5 seconds. I’ve been brushing with sensodyne and there’s been a (very tiny) improvement over the last week or so. I’m confused because I seem to have a mixture of symptoms of irreversible and reversible pulpitis – is it a waiting game, or should I go back and request further investigation? Thank you!
Sometimes it does take months for teeth to settle down after having work done. It is a good sign the sensitivity fades quickly. You are not hurting the teeth by waiting to see if they calm down on their own.

Got a upper filling filled 4 months ago after the procedure I felt no pain. Until a week ago, I started to feel an intense throbbing and increased sensitivity to cold and hot foods. The pain goes down jaw line, ear and would aggravate the tooth. I got it removed and the dr put a temp filling and was on antibiotics she thought it was an infection to. So I go back to remove the temp filling and same issues same tooth days later I have tingling sensation my whole face with the same tooth pain like before it hurts when I Press the tooth that was filling. What could it be ?! My dentist doesn’t seem to think anything wrong . Is there an issues with the nerve I keep telling my dentist that she doesn’t seem to think it is …
I would get a second opinion. I feel like you will need a Root Canal with the kind of pain you are describing.
Thanks,

Hello just wondering how long would it take a nerve to settle down after being hit while getting a filling that wasn’t frozen thanks

Hello, I had a filling redone on one of my back molar teeth 2 weeks ago. I had an amalgam filling replaced with a white filling. My dentist said there was a slight bit of decay there that had to be dealt with too. I kind of knew this as I would get a sharp uncomfortable feeling when I flossed between that tooth. I’ m not sure how deep the filling is. Initially after the filling I had a slight sharp pain when I was chewing something hard but this seems to have died down. I put a piece of ice on the tooth and felt no sensitivity but if I’m eating something hot I get slight sensitivity that linger about for about 20 minutes after. I wouldn’t even say its sore maybe a 1/10 on the pain scale. I can get a random pain in my jaw that’s about a 2/10 but that will last seconds. Do you think my tooth needs a bit more time to calm down or should I go back to my dentist?
It sounds like normal healing pain after having a filling. Take ibuprofen to help with the discomfort. If your tooth become painful where the pain does not go away call your dentist.

Hi there, thank you for your previous reply. It has been 3 months since this filling now. I went back to the dentist about a month ago and they shaved a bit off my bite and gave me a fluoride toothpaste. This has helped somewhat but the sensitivity to hot and cold has become more frequent. Although, the more frequently I use the toothpaste the more bearable the heat sensitivity becomes but it never fully goes away and is still impacted how and what I eat on a daily basis. I now have random tingling in the tooth throughout the day and slight aching pain now and again. I do feel that despite the bite being shaved down, that this tooth still hits my bottom teeth first (ever so slightly). X-rays show no infection and dentist says there is a few millimetres between the filling and the nerve of the tooth. Could the bite being slightly off be causing these symptoms to increase? Or could there be a need for root canal despite noting showing on the x-ray? The dentist did comment that the nerve of the tooth appears to be more faint than the nerves of the surrounding teeth, but they did not know if this meant something or not. Thank you for your help so far.
If you are still hitting that tooth first, it can cause the pain you are feeling. I would call you dentist back and let them know you feel the bite is still high. Have them check you bite while you are sitting up, your bite can be different while lying down. Then they can put you back to adjust the bite.
Thanks,

Got a cavity filled over a month ago. I had to go back 4 times for sensitivity and pain. He replaced the filling and it’s almost 2 weeks in with the new filling and air going through my teeth hurts, rinsing my mouth with any temperature water hurts. Also eating anything from soft the hard foods hurt. I’m so tired of going to the dentist when they can’t fix it
It sounds like you may need a root canal with all the pain you are having. Call your Dentist and see what they think. You could also get a second opinion.
Thanks,
WFDC Team
Hi. I got 3 fillings done about 3 months ago in 3 different areas of my teeth. One of the fillings wasn’t even for a cavity, but to adjust a gap between my teeth. Ever since then, all 3 teeth hurt with pressure from hard foods or with pressure from a fingernail. The dentist has already redone two of the fillings twice! So those areas have had 3 filling each in 3 months. Sharp pain from fingernail pressure still there. No sensitivity to wanting else. What could have gone wrong with the original fillings to cause this problem on all 3 teeth, especially since redoing the fillings has not helped? An I just destined to have to get them all root canals? Thanks
You can always get a second opinion? If they are not hot and cold sensitive that’s a good sign. I assuming the dentist adjusted the bite because they are sensitive to pressure. I would also ask your dentist if they placed a base down before the filling. You may need to just take Tylenol or Advil and see if time will help. I would not jump into root canals just yet.
Thanks,
WFDC Team
I had a deep filling done about a week ago. I have throbbing sensitivity to hot/cold that last few minutes. Is this normal?
Since it’s only been a week and with the filling being close to the nerve it may take a few weeks to calm down. If the hot and cold starts lasting longer or the pain intensify you may need a root canal.
Thanks,
WFDC Team
If your tooth is sensitive, call your dentist. Your nerve may need greater time to calm down, or the tooth may need to be adjusted.
How does a dental surgeon adjust a painful tooth? Just curious?
The dentist adjust the tooth with a hand piece and a bur. It usually does not require getting numb.
The WFDC Team
As long as it’s not too bad I would take some ibuprofen to help with the dull ache. The tooth maybe just trying to adjust to the new fillings. If the pain gets worse, I would call your dentist seeing the decay was close to the nerve you may need a root canal.
Thanks, WFDC Team
I got 2 fillings on the right side of my mouth at the beginning of February, and have been to my dentist and a solution was applied to the tooth to help with the sensitivity, and the bite was also adjusted. I still have pain when I eat food and its sensitive to hot and cold, I’ve told my dentist this but have been told to continue to wait and give the tooth more time to heal. What should I do?
You can try brushing with a sensitive toothpaste. Take some ibuprofen to help with the pain. Ask your dentist if they placed a base down before the fillings, if he did not you may consider having him redo the filling with a base. I always have a base put down before every filling no matter the size. I’m thinking you should only be charged for the base, but not the filling. Down side to this is you will have to get numb again.
Thanks WFDC Team
Hi I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out 8weeks ago and 4 weeks ago had a deep clean and 3 fillings .. I have been getting really bad pain in my head my right demple to be exact it’s that bad that im not sleep pain relief isnt working eder .. what do u think it could be .
I would call your dentist to let them know what kind of pain you’re in. I think you should be seen and have the filling checked. I’m guessing the extractions sites are fine since you did the deep cleaning and the fillings. If they were still sore you would not have done more work until the extraction sites were feeling good. I’m guessing one of the 3 fillings you had done the bite is off or you may need a root canal.
Thanks WFDC Team
